'Mystery Cop' Plays Basketball With Kid in San Antonio

Quick Summary
Quote:
So a 12-year old is playing basketball outside in the street with his mother inside the house. An officer pulls up and gets out the car. The mother gets nervous at first. She's relieved when she sees that the officer just wanted to play one-on-one with the kid.

She uploaded a video of the game and the video goes viral. Now she wants to get in touch with the officer to thank him. Some are even using the word "hero."
Now if the guy who pulled up was instead just a random person in casual clothing, I'm pretty sure the mother would have a completely different reaction. She would be worried for her son and immediately go out to protect him.

It's interesting that the presence of a badge and uniform can make one's feelings toward a situation do a complete 180 even though the cop is also a random stranger to her and her son.

How do you guys feel about the presence of a badge and uniform (and cop car) having such a powerful influence over our perspective on life?

Cop was fishing. Trying to get the kid to say his mom was inside getting high. Then cop could break down door and shoot mom.

What if it was just some random guy breaking down her door and shooting her?

Then the random cop will show up, re-break the door down and shoot the random stranger.

I have no idea what's so interesting that a badge and uniform makes one feel differently about the cop. That's the entire purpose of the badge and uniform.

It makes me feel that the woman should get up, fix the door, break it down and then shoot the cop so it all comes full circle.

Also, I'm wondering when the posters who hate cops will come chime in. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few posters who feel even more threatened by a cop than a random stranger.

I think you're interpretation is completely ludicrous or US society is now more completely ****ed up than I remember. When I was 12 or 13 I played pickup ball with all sorts of random grown men who showed up randomly at the courts. There was a cab driver who used to take a break from his rounds and play a game or two. I remember him because he played in loafers, but he had a monster long shot so it didn't matter at all. There were some thuggish guys who were recently out of prison and made us play a version of 21 where you didnt get to take the ball out, it was straight back up, and it was not allowed to call fouls.

I'd trust most random strangers more than I'd ever trust any cop

****ing cop wanted an easy win because he's insecure and picks on a 12 year old. typical scumbag behavior.

as a taxpayer and therefore the source of this cop's salary, I want to know why he wasn't doing his job. I'd love to go play basketball on the clock.

Terrible mother, that could have been a pedo impersonating a police officer.

"Hey little Johnny, wanna come for a ride along **wink wink**."

What would you do if a random stranger tried giving you a prostate exam?

The power of a coat and stethoscope.

1/100 cops are rapists.
1/10 non-cop strangers are rapists.

Mom just playing the odds.

What exactly is the question here? Obviously people do and should feel safer around a cop than some random stranger.

Though it would be funny if he just shoved the kid, took his ball, and drove away. WHATCHA GONNA DO
