I wasn't drunk. I think I saw the sentence which probably implied that, as it was poorly written.

FYP.

Once people actually talk to them those judgments either go away or just get confirmed. This of course excludes true racists unless something about that person really makes them change there way of thought.

Most people do how every joke about stereotypes. Even about there own race.

This is pretty standard in the South.

Southerners rarely have a problem with blacks as individuals, just as a group.

not to defend racism, and sorry if it's been said already, but your dad may have been trying to save Rob from the embarrassment of being kicked out, or losing his(your dad's) membership, as a lot of golf clubs are racist in who they allow to play their course or w/e

lots of the stuff in this thread may not be racist. just using offensive terms may not necessarily indicate racism.

anyway, my parents are def not racist. my grandparents proly are but i think they are kinda ashamed of it. hard to explain that conversation but it was about voting for obama.

a more striking conversation was with my grandparents neighbors. it was late 90s and they were about hte same age. i had to go over there and clean their gutters and do some other housework. i went inside to get some water and chat and it happened to mlk day and thats what the tv was showing. clyde said "i still dont know why all those coloreds were making a fuss."

what struck me was how ingenuous it was. it wasnt malicious or sneering. just the way the world was to him.

While in the specific instance ops actions can be construed as slightly odd, saying its strange to stand up for a grown man has to be the stupidest blanket statement I have ever heard.

I am sure even your feeble mind can come up with a few scenarios where one might need to stand up for grown men.

Yeah I wasn't exactly sure what's wrong about diffusing a situation where your racist daddy is about to get punched.

It's good to see that the Tolerance training they put us through in the schools will eventually kick in a decade after the fact and make us separate from our families and unite with the great Toleration Society that shall dominate the western world in short order. Keep the dream alive. Toleration uber alles.

Everyone's grandparents are racist to one degree or another.

One of my most vivid early memories of my Granddad was watching a western on TV when i was no older than 11 (likely more around 8 or 9) and when they built towards the classic shoot out scene a chinese guy hid behind a wall and my Granddad said something like "chinky has the right idea".
Stories like this don't sound like racism at all to me, but rather just a funny expression. I'd probalby laugh and forget about it unless it was said with anger.

Overall I think a lot of the examples, especially with old people stories, aren't that racist. While my parents aren't very racist, they do have some tendency that is only ever expressed around family dinner table. I don't think they act any differently in real-life situations, and even their dinner-table `racism`is mild.

My parents were raised in Dearborn, MI.

I have an aunt that refers to mexicans as "inside-out ni**ers." I have no idea what this means.

I have a pseudo-aunt or something (no relation, but she's like friends with a cousin's mom) who came from Germany. She really really really hates jews and denies that the holocaust ever happened.

I had a grandpa that asked me if my GF's pussy was slanted too (she was asian). I said no.

Perhaps I can think of more fun stories.

My first wife is from Brazil.

This is a conversation we had that actually didn't surprise me. She calls meon the phone pissed off.

Her - You need to call the daycare our son is at!
Me - Why?
Her - They treat me bad just because I'm Brazillian. They descriminate against me and it's terrible. I can't believe they would treat me badly just because of where I'm from. They don't even know me and they look down on me! Isn't that the worst thing in the world where they treat me bad and don't even know me?!?!?! How can you look down on orhate someone without even knowing them? It's not like I'm black or anything.
Me - ok

BTW - She didn't say black she said the N word.
