Hopdaddy's in Austin has fantastic burgers, and some really good beer to go with them.

As the OP is from Portland (the Clyde Common burger is one of my favorites in town, and it's a freakin' great deal at happy hour)... here's another local suggestion.

My new favorite burger in town is from Little Bird or Le Pigeon (only 5 a night are made at Le Pigeon however):

Tillamook four-year aged white cheddar, grilled pickles onions, iceberg lettuce slaw, housemade aioli, housemade ketchup, and housemade Dijon mustard.

I think American cheese actually works fairly well on burgers. I mean, obviously I'd rather have a good cheddar if it's available, but I'd rather have American cheese than none.

American cheese is great on the right stuff.

Like sometimes I want a nice gourmet burger with aged whatever and artisant ketchup and blah blah blah.

Sometimes I want to recreate a nicer version of a middle school lunch burger (the kind that had weird moon craters in them) and that's what American cheese is for.

Spoiler:
ok, it's really for when I want to make white trash sandos with wonder bread and bologna, but this is not a sando thread

Hamburger Hamlet makes a really good burger.

There was a place near The Burbank Studios, Hamptons, great burgers.
On the same corner as Bob's Big Boy and The Hot Dog Show.

Those are the best sit down burgers I remember.

Good call on this one. I have been lucky enough to sample this. I only got a bit though off of my GF's plate. She wasnt giving up any more than that! Le Pigeon is great all the way around.

You can tell the burger pros from the amateurs based on the bun, any post where the juices have soaked through the bottom bun is not to be trusted. A good hearty roll is needed for structural integrity.

yes

I've had burgers on bagels and potato cakes that have been brilliant for this very reason

This is a Goober Burger from a little place in IL. Something about the mixture of peanut butter and miracle whip makes this burger the nuts. All components made in house (standard for a delicious burger) including the PB and MW.

How have I never heard of this place? Looks excellent. For local PDX burgers, it's hard to beat the Winterburger at Slow Bar, IMO. The Slowburger is pretty good too.
