It's not like I'm throwing out something crazy here. I've done the Zone diet, the South Beach diet, my nutritionist and this thing called Michael Thurmond - they're all based on the same concept. Atkins is the only one I know that advocates eating crap.
When I first went on the zone I felt so much better just from all the processed crap I wasn't putting in my system any more. That energy boost alone really helped me along.
The diet LFS' lost so much weight on had very strict requirements on the type of food he could eat. Why doesn't UCLA just tell people "hey eat less of the same crap"? Because it's not sustainable. It doesn't start good eating habits, which he will absolutely need to keep the weight off.
So much face palm.
First: He shouldn't just start eating 1600 calories. He has a BMR of roughly 2411.4. With the Harris Benedict Equation, that means he can eat 2893 calories a day and maintain his size. So, to lose a pound a week he needs to eat 2393/day. Or roughly around there.
Second: I think he honestly just needs to get into the habit of tracking calories. That should be his first goal and only goal currently. Every day, all day, everything that goes into his mouth gets tracked. Habits don't get changed in one broad stroke. Habits get changed in tiny amounts. Do too much and you're just setting yourself up for failure.
Also, if you've been so successful "dieting" why do you do it so often? Why have you been on so many?
