Warning: semantic nittery.

When talking about decades, we often refer to the stage of the decade by labelling it "early", "mid" or "late", e.g. "He's in his early twenties" or "the late 2000s recession". But where are the cut-off points?

Mathematically, if each period makes up exactly 1/3 of the decade, the thresholds are 3.33 and 6.67. But we don't usually pay attention to fractions, i.e. no-one says "I'm 23 and a third".

So where are the thresholds? Is 23 early or mid twenties? Is 2006 mid or late 2000s? Does it vary for different ages of people, or vary between ages and time periods?

Regarding ones 20s,

20-24, early

25-27 middle

28-29 late

This would change for subsequent aging decades.

Edit I was thinking for aging, not actual time periods

I do this to my wife every New Year's Day at 12:00:06: next year, you'll be N+3. I'm N. I'm only 6 months younger than she, but she is an aging boomer, while I am a Gen-Xer. The mid- and late-forties was critical: next year, you'll be in your late forties. I'm 44.

Edit: the 0 year is the odd one out, and goes to the early, obviously. The rest are split 3-3-3.

3 can go both ways, maybe 7 as well.

I think.

6 sounds very middling, while 7 sounds kind of a tossup even though mathematically it's clearly in the upper third (it's the equivalent of 2 which everyone would call "early"). Maybe I should have made 7 an option. The nature of starting at 0 and not rounding up seems to cause this disparity.

I was going to call the OP an idiot for this (you're acting like the year ending in zero comes at the end of the decade; it comes at the beginning). But then I mis-clicked while voting, and decided not to be dickish. Too late?

Why was 6 afraid of 7?

Spoiler:
Because 6 is a ****ing homophobe.

When was it 1/3 of the way between January 1st, 2000 and December 31st, 2009?

0 is self explanatory, but then again i guess it isn't because the OP thinks every decade ends in 0.

This thread was started in the early part of the decade. It was bumped a year and a half later and it's still the early part of the decade. I predict mrcatlover1989 will be banned before the middle part of the decade
