You can get the ‘82 Granny Goose for about $100.

I still have a book filled with Rickey Hendersons.

That's how I had my player collections in my folders. I like the 81 Fleer and Donruss and the 82 Topps styles, I think I had the rookie cards in solo holders. Back then I never cared about if the card was perfectly cut but I did care if there was gums stains or dinged corners. I remember buying the 1984 Topps traded set but never bought the Fleer update set. I did have the Roger Clemens rookie though. Also, it was rare when a friend would get an older card, even if it was common

I tried to get my 5 year old boy into cards but he wasn't that interested, that saved me some cash because I would have went hog wild buying older sets for me/him.

Dig out your old video games, and keep them in working order instead. Feel free to put your 1993 Fleer Flairs on your bike spokes.

Spoiler:
Some idiot did recently pay millions for a Mike Trout 2009(?) card.
there are plenty of cards from the 80s and 90s worth lots... even some junk wax era stuff

When basketball cards started going bananas last fall I dug out and sorted through my old collection. I trimmed ~25,000 cards down to about 400 that I think are worth something and 2,000 from sets and years that aren't hugely expense but still worth ~$0.25-0.75. I'm hoping to take them to a card show and sell off the strubbs for $50-100 and maybe a few of the collectibles if someone wants to buy raw. Grading has gone ri-gd-diculous.

Got screwed by being in the *asterisk era with Clemens, Sosa, McGuire and Bonds

Find me some actual sales proof, not what's listed in Beckett or ebay.

Pokemon and Magic have also gone nuts during Covid times. I started doing MTG arbitrage stuff recently and it's been a lot of fun. Collectibles are going crazy right now.

Yeah, was a collector, not an investor and #diamondhands. I'm sure I'll regret it eventually. I own zero graded cards and zero Alphas, though, so not missing out on too too much

Any dual lands and power are insane right now.

If ANYONE has magic cards from the 90s please let me know. EVEN IF YOU THINK THEY'RE GARBAGE, they probably are not. Just hit me up and sell me them.

Seems an appropriate time to write about jebaiting/StorageWars-ing myself...one of my parents has been having some serious health issues lately, so I've been at their place quite frequently over the last month. Part of my non-illustrious past is stashed away there, games, musical gear, stuff we didn't have room for post-wedding.

I went into a shed (so weatherproof, but not insulated) trying to find my copy of Robo Rally. While digging through a closet, I come across a bunch of 3200-ct boxes and an 800-ct Magic-specific box. Now, I know I did a bulk sale in ~2000-01 when I quit playing, but what I didn't remember specifically is how much stuff the dealer took off my hands and what the timing was relative to the later sets that I had. For instance, being a completionist, I know I finished off a three-set block after I stopped playing to have the whole thing bindered up.

Anyway, I'm thinking this is all commons, but start looking through the 800-ct box which is almost all empty Card Pros, but there are a couple of sleeved cards that I start looking through. Brainstorm, Kaervek's Torch...ho hum. Beta Ankh, Beta Scepter WTFWTFWTF

Now I'm questioning my memory of how much stuff I got rid of. Start looking through the 3200-ct boxes and there's stuff from Ice Age all the way through Invasion. Goddammit, now I'm going to back the car up, get all dirty, take this stuff back home and try to sort through it.

I did this and my memory was sharper than usual, almost all commons remained. There was still some "good stuff" scattered throughout, mostly things that weren't tourney legal at the time I did the bulk sale (Unglued, Portal, Portal Second Age) but yeah, the treasure trove of Grim Monoliths did not appear.

So I bought clean boxes, and am stashing the whole thing away until next time...

If you think all ebay sales are fake, that's fine. I can't gather up people's paypal/credit card statements to show proof. I've made close to 1000 buys/sales on ebay in the 17 months. Can find plenty of high value Jordan, Kobe, Griffey, Duncan, Garnetts from the 80s/90s.

I do like whatever warping scheme is causing some of these prices to appear on goldfish right now. I don't own a $200K Beta Mind Twist lol, but I have a couple of Bad Moons that if someone wanted to give me $20K apiece for, my hands would un-diamond in about 0.0 seconds

I would certainly buy it for a few hundred. I can explain why the pricing looks like that, too.

That had to be fun rummaging through all of those cards. Sounds like you have some nice things still. I have 2 boys that like to collect Pokémon cards so I know a little about that stuff but I don’t know a thing about MTG.

Yes and no, tbh. Once I saw where the card distribution was going, it involved breathing a lot of dust and breaking down old boxes simply to transfer stuff into new boxes.

I either sold or lost a Tom Brady RC 5-10 years ago - thankfully not one of his 6-figure cards, but pissed nevertheless

Also remember passing on buying his Bowman Chrome RC as a kid (because $50 was too expensive at 17), the one that's now ~$30k in gem mint condition

I ran into Tom Brady at the ATM near Gillette around 2002/2003 and was with my baby son, who is 19 now. Asked him to sign the shoes he was wearing, but definitely wish I had a card or memorabilia of some kind instead
