What does "conflict may lead to formation of competing affiliates in an organization" mean?

I'm doing a project on conflict mgmt and one of the negative effects of conflict is:
-formation of competing affiliates in an organization
I need to expand on it but I'm firstly unable to understand what exactly it means. I guessed it means it leads to two different parties with two different opinions and therefore, both parties tend to compete against each other instead of working towards common organizational goals.. but I don't think that's correct.. because this point refers to "affiliates" which might relate to some other stuff..
