That looks pretty good--I'll look for it next trip to Asian market.

Jack fruit does look light on nutritional value--do vegans ever cheat by adding protein powder to the bbq sauce or something? Or in a case like this is the imitative flavor just paramount?

Holliday,

I dunno but a friend told me it is the best vegan faux-meat thing she has ever had, and the only one she has ever really liked.

Was pescatarian for a year ate only sea fish. Then fell in love with -veg pates.

Got half a dozen of shelf recently again, they are still the best veg substitute there is. From shrooms from soy different veggies herbs... i have no idea how but like, highly fermented mashed and pressed those basic ingredients with oils salt pepper and spices taste just as if not better without any additives than the best geese or good ham pates.... to me.
I tried pretty much everything else there is/ was steaks sausages hotdogs and nothing else just tofu based gave me such a full satisfactory, meaty taste.

Why would adding (veg) protein powder be 'cheating'.. Unless you mean 'vegans' that 'cheat a little' have 'cheat days' but bs and flaunt ... They are only worse then fn tr00 vegtards that jump with ''Shrooms are'' They are vegetative bae they grow from the ground they live for days they reproduce through seed that animals eat they don't run or scream... My biggest mistake was that i never used any (protein) supplements i was just pigging out on fish shrooms pate/soy all the things i absolutely always loved so i thought why not, cause i got fool heated high on my prospectous elitist Poker Career (suck it DNegs i never liked you) cause cancer crushed my big strong Pops cause i really like Animals cause she was still is i guess a veg, for my fn health cause they feed us **** in a bun...

I'd really enjoy to read an argument between vegetarians about mushrooms and fungus in general.

I just meant "cheating" in the same way as using frozen chopped onions or adding some of the wine you'll be serving to the sauce to ensure a good match. Not like my taxes cheating.

Been efforting on the jackfruit; found everything except the called for "jack fruit in water". Found it in syrup, in brine, and even fresh the size of a beach ball. Decided to try some "in brine" after washing and it wasn't bad:

Still had a mild fruitiness to it but that may just be me undercooking it. Sauteed with Viper "SWEET No Heat" bbq sauce. Texture was indeed rather similar to tender pork. Poached baby bok choi. Brown rice topped with fermented, decomposed soy beans known as natto.

I had some bok choy yesterday as well. Underrated veggie

I like bok choy too. Stir-fried in sesame oil with some garlic and chili, yum. Although steamed is nice also.

What's the point of being vegan if you buy canned fruit that traveled across the world ?

Eating a local chicken is better than that

By what measure is eating a local chicken better than eating imported fruit?

Arguably an ecological one. Sourcing food locally is a different ethical issue than whether or not to eat animals though, and there seems to be less overlap between the two movements than I would expect.

I live in a poker grindhouse in Phuket so the jackfruit and chicken are both local. Also, I'm not vegan.

The jackfruit had very little flavor (maybe it has more if it's ripe) on it's own. It tastes like it looks below--bland, like juicy boiled local chicken breast.

With some BBQ sauce

And sauteed onion

Served on sourdough bread with coleslaw

Not sure if the texture is like pulled pork; it reminded me of cactus or artichoke heart. Flavor-wise, it's basically a delivery system for BBQ sauce. It was obviously delicious, just like anything with BBQ sauce and coleslaw on fresh sourdough bread would be.

The wife makes a killer BBQ jackfruit that definitely has the texture of pulled pork, but I think her secret is that she cooks it in a crock pot and lets it cook down for a good hour or so. She also adds a bunch of other stuff to it besides just BBQ sauce. Let me know if there's interest and I can bother her for the recipe and post it.

I've only had jack fruit once, in Brazil. It was (possibly too) ripe, and kind of exploded and expanded in my mouth when I tried to eat it, so I literally couldn't swallow it. Same thing happened to all the folks I was with, it was a very strange sensation, and we had to just spit it out in the end. It also had a slightly unpleasant, overly sweet, sickly, smell to it.

We're not at all fussy eaters, but it put us off the fresh stuff. That BBQ version looks interesting though.

There's interest! I still can't get the flavor right just sauteeing. Please post it.

I also found a pre-marinated version at 3x price at Whole Foods. Was meh.

looks interesting, I would have expected it to fall apart on a grill.

Taiwan made it illegal to purchase (eat?) Dog and cat meat.

Some of this guy's vids are pretty meh but I enjoy his meal prep ones. Nothing fancy just cheap and easy.

Been on a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet for 2, almost 3 weeks now. How concerned should I be about iron intake? Is it something you need to consciously be aware of or is just your normal, not completely awful diet usually gonna meet all your iron needs?

I don't really eat nuts or legumes. I have some pistachios but I don't think their iron content is super high.
