Explain exactly how that declaration is telling others how virtuous you are and how they aren't virtuous?
Combinations of words have implicit meanings - it's called language.

Alternative and less douchy ways of saying the same thing:

"I'm into animal welfare"
"I don't want to eat meat"
etc
etc

If the questioner persists, then they are the douche.

I don't drink alcohol and once in a blue moon someone will go at me a little hard Most people just go "umm" and let it go, but some people get really strange and I just figure they have their own issues with it. I don't care, live and let live.
Umm. Are you saying all of your posts have be made while sober? Just unreal!

I've asked this when meeting new people who aren't eating meat or people I already know who have switched to not eating meat. Its really not that weird of a question and as said, I've never gotten weird answers. It can be interesting to know what drives people to behave the way they do.

Horse****. "I'm into animal welfare" is just as "virtuous," if not more so, and "I don't want to eat meat" is an obnoxious answer to "Why did you become a vegetarian?" because it's obvious the person doesn't want to eat meat and they are asking why you don't want to eat meat.

I mean, lol @ anyone tying a bunch of "implicit" thoughts and judgment into a benign response to a question. I have to assume you guys are just bored and doing the weekend troll thingy, or you really feel it's morally wrong to kill animals for food and feel they are more virtuous than you are. In either case, it's really a you thingy.

Tip: if a person asks a vegetarian what led them to their choice and you are within earshot, run out of the room quickly so you don't hear the answer.

Dude, asking someone why they're a vegan is not like asking someone why they don't eat carrots, like the color blue, or don't drive American cars. Come on.

Go around for a month and tell people you're a vegan and give an evasive response when they ask why and report the results.

So is the bad part that it's against his beliefs, or that he gives a short, honest, straightforward answer?

Is it not possible to say, when asked, thay something is against your beliefs, without being a jerk?

Or "I don't believe in using drugs."

All seem fine to me if the user asked. You must be the PC police in your social circle that seems to keep thinning by the day, I suspect.

I guess if the conversation's already about morality then it's a frank discussion about differences without one side trying to take the moral high ground.

But if you ask someone "Who did you vote for in the election?" and get the reply "It's against my principles to vote", you might have reason to think that a sanctimonious reply when others such as "I never vote because..." are available instead.

LOL - How often do you find yourself justifying yourself by saying something like, "I'm just an honest person"?

What? It would be WHY did you vote for X, or it would be why didn't you vote.

I can only conclude you're trolling.

The discussion hasn't been "would you like a bite of my burger?" It's literally been, "why are you vegan/vegetarian?"

Never.

How often do you find yourself being asked repeatedly something like, "Really? You're not just saying that, are you? Come on, tell the truth?"

"Would you like a bite of my burger?"

"No thanks."

"Why not?"

"It's against my beliefs" would be kinda weird here.

But that hasn't been what we're talking about itt.

We're talking about this:

"Would you like a bite of my burger?"

"No thanks."

"Why not?"

"I'm vegetarian/vegan."

"Why?"

"It's against my beliefs to eat meat (or animal products)."

Apparently my FYP is less douchey than an honest answer.

This week someone I was gonna cook for told me she was vegetarian. I saw no reason to ask anything other than "do you eat fish?"

But why?

Because a lot of people who like to call themselves vegetarian to make themselves feel more virtuous do eat fish (and some wear and buy leather goods).

I'm well aware. It was a bad joke about how you think an endless string of "but why" is not childish, but that it's douchey to give a concise answer.

Sort of a double entendre, as it also serves to facetiously ask him why he left out the "why" question to his friend.

Purchasing leather goods doesn't go against the tenets of vegetarianism. Eating fish does, obviously
