I remember a scene where he is talking to the girl at night in a car. I wanna say they are secluded. Like an old County Road type thing.

Saw it probably 10 years ago on a free Showtime or HBO preview. It was about a group of younger adults, probably early 20's or so, and they robbed a bank. I seem to recall a scene like you described in Dead Man Walking. It's the crime for which Penn's character goes to death row for.
