Tbh, I've never even thought of it, unless it's a situation where it takes 10 minutes or something redic to get your change or be given your bill after you've asked for it. It's a Didacey kind of thing, imo. Don't be so nitty.

Seems to make sense to me. I couldn't see giving any less than $5 for the convenience, and if the dude is bringing in wheelbarrows of food, then hit him with more cash.
But that's like a 50℅ tip, better get spring's thoughts on the matter.

Food delivery to me is a flat rate, typically $5 including delivery fee

As a server, I always bring back the change without asking. In fact, I don't even check at first if they paid with cash or card, I just grab the closed check presenter off the table and say, "I'll be right back with this."

As I walk away, I'll crack open the book to see if it's cash (so I can calculate what I'll need to leave for change on my way to the POS station) or if there's more than one card, so I can turn around and gesture a chop-chop motion to them implying if they'd like me to split it down the middle. 99% of the time, they give me a thumbs up.

The ONLY time that I might not bring back change is if it's incredibly obvious that they are intending for me to keep it. For example, the bill is exactly $35, and they leave a $20, $10, $5, and 5 singles. But I'll still turn around and give a gesture of "is this set?" which literally 100% of the times I've done this, they have said that it is. Although I'm sure Springs would complain that I'm being presumptive and that they might have wanted me to break one of those singles, and I'M STEALING their option to leave me a tip of just $4.50 or something.

As a disclaimer, I'm probably in the top 1% of servers as far as going unnecessarily above and beyond what most other servers do though, to the point of being neurotically so. I'm not showing off, I have a people-pleasing neurotic side that I think this job brings out of me.

The above wasn't really an example of this, btw, but one such example is say the check is $47 and they pay with three $20s, a lot of servers will return the $13 change in a $10 and 3 singles. But this is problematic bc you're forcing the customer to leave a tip of 3 or less, or 10 or more. Many servers purposefully do this because they think that enough people will leave the 10 to make up for the others who only leave the 3 singles. But I think it's ****ty customer service, so I'd bring a $5 and 8 singles so that they can leave any tip they want.

So I guess I take it upon myself to try to stay one step ahead of any possible issue that a customer might have. But this is not the norm, and it's entirely possible to receive very good service from a server who doesn't do the gazillion finer inflection points that I try to hit. But the fact that Springs does think that the gazillion finer inflection points ARE the norm and her overreaction puts her in straight up psycho territory, and when I've had customers like this, I may only give A- service instead of A+ because I know that there is a good chance that they're not going to tip well anyway. People like her are looking for something to complain about, and they almost get more infuriated when you beat them to the things that they normally get to complain about, because it's the only way they can feel like a big person during their miserable and pointless existence. The world would be a far better place without people like this, but until overpopulation becomes such a glaring problem that hunting other humans becomes good and legal, we just have to put up with these people and smile and nod at all of their ridiculous complaints and requests, and find some solace in giving their sides of ranch a personal kick.

Just my 31 cents.

So you'll spit in someone's food?

No, he'll hunt Springs1 once it's legal to do so. He's gonna have to be fast if he wants to get there first though.

DD,

Better to being 2 $5 bills and 3 $1 bills IMO.

min for delivery is 15$ in both places i work so this never happens. the best tip i have gotten for delivery is 50$ the worst is -.60 cents. guy did not have enough money.

in my experience.
Professions that tip the best are strippers, ER nurses/staff. everyone else average. The worst are car salesmen.

The only real stereotype that i found to be true is people from India area of the world are the worst at tipping usually 0 or 1 dollar no matter what the order size.

Uneducated black people do not tip well either.

Great post Double Down, but El D is correct regarding the return of change imo.

For sure. And I'll do this a lot, actually. The less bills makes it tidier. The only drawback is that it doesn't give them an option to leave a $4 or $9 tip, which is why I slightly prefer the other way. This is admittedly nitty on my part, but gives you a taste of my neurotically over compensating thought process.

I'm just trying to help you elevate yourself from a top 1% server to top .1% level.

DD sounds like the elusive server I will tip 30%.

Exemplary service makes a good meal great.

I agree with ED.

Bringing that many singles sends a loud message that the server is practically demanding a tip. I do not like to receive that message.

I would agree. $11 I think is the line to use more singles. A $5 and 6 singles beats 2 fives and a single.

one of the things i love about fresh direct and similar grocery delivery services is that the delivery people do not accept tips

How did you break up his change? Did you give him back 3 quarters + 1 dime + 1 nickel?
or 2 quarters + 2 dimes + 3 nickels + 5 pennies so that he could give you any sized tip he wanted?

If you're just ordering something smallish for delivery, in the $7-8 range, giving a $10 is standard, right??

yea that's fine. the thing with delivery too you should take account on how far the driver has to go for the delivery.

Most places charge 1-3$ delivery fee too which the drivers never get. They get a flat fee of 5$ a hour.

More likely it goes towards fuel and insurance.
