Can confirm as a Euro that America not including taxes in prices is probably the #1 most tilting thing about visiting the country. Maybe tied with tipping.

Just tell me the actual number of dollars I have to give you to get a thing and so the guy serving me can afford to live.

Just break it out separately on the receipt if it matters that much to you (as done in every other country ever).

My wife and I went out for dinner with my buddy and his then gf. She was a stupid, stupid woman.

Anyways, bill comes, she grabs it to take a look and then says "it's a good then they don't tax each item individually"

And me not being a person to leave things alone replies "what do you mean?"

She said "well thinks about how big the bill would be if they taxed each item individually instead of all together at the end"

I just nodded slowly, and then we left.

The distributive property of multiplication would like to have a word with you.

I guess I have to clarify my post. This applies to Pennsylvania, I don't know how other states do it.

If you buy an item for 1 cent there is 1 cent of tax. So if you do that 100 times you have spent $2.

But if you buy one hundred one cent items in a single transaction you only pay $1.06.

So what do you want the store to put on the price tag?

Around 60% of what I pay for gas is tax so how about you guys take a chill pill, 0,95 cents of the price per liter (1,55) goes to the gubernment. That's 6,50 $ (5,89 euro) a gallon of which 3,90 goes to taxes. All our taxes are included in the price so you have no idea what you're paying until you look it up.

Unless the sales tax rate in Pennsylvania is >50% I don't see how that's possible.

I like this one. I work with a woman who is nice as hell but similar to her I believe. A few months ago I took a day off. The next day she asked if I was sick and I replied "no, I needed a mental health day". She asked excitedly how many of those we got a year, and if they had been added to the employee handbook yet.

I worked with a guy who thought you could use long-term medical disability for when you catch a cold.

He was over the age of 30.

For items that cost a penny it is 100%.

Since the system was setup before calculators there is a chart somewhere (that I can't find online ) that tells merchants how much to charge. Obv they tended to round to their advantage.

Good thing nothing costs a penny.

Why is it to stores advantage to round up sales tax? Do they get to write it off on their corporate taxes.

it's not their choice... the government is being governmental and robbing people a fraction of a penny one transaction at a time

not sure if its just a pennsylvania thing

When I was a kid, I used to go to the store with a dollar and individually purchase 20 5cent candies to avoid tax

Re: no problem/you're welcome

As a server I use both of these depending on the situation. For example, when someone is gluten free with a shellfish/other random allergy and realize it's ridiculous for them to be in a seafood restuarant I use "no problem" (just an example).

"I understand I'm in a seafood restuarant but thank you for taking the time to make sure the food won't kill me."

"No problem, ma'am. Is everything going well with your meal so far?"

I mean I just made that up, but is that an appropriate "no problem"?

Sounds like a perfect place for it, but you might want to elaborate: "No problem, ma'am. Saving lives is what I do. I don't throw the word 'hero' around lightly but, yes, I guess I'm a hero."

You sure she wasn't referring to the physical size of the bill? If the bill were itemized+taxes it would indeed have been a big bill.
