So txdome bringing up cops being overpaid isn’t political but me saying teachers are more overpaid is political? For the most part both political parties support teachers getting raises and pension bumps therefore I would think teachers pay isn’t a political issue. However, cops pay seems to have a political divide so maybe you should have quoted txdome’s post instead of mine.

Your post calling me out pisses me off but shouldn’t.

It pisses me off that people who claim certain professions are overpaid aren't lining up to get on the gravy train.

Also let's not forget with teaching you get Summers off and all those holiday days to boot!

Yup. And you certainly don't have to work tons of hours (many at home) grading papers and doing lesson prep, or go to continuing ed seminars during the school breaks, etc.

All you have to do is babysit for a few hours a day and chill as the taxpayers make you rich and happy.

Plus, think how strong your immune system is after hanging around those little germ factories all day!

7 hours per day plus what 2.5 hours a week at home gets us to 7.5 hours a day. 37.5 hours a week is brutal.

Yeah, teachers essentially only get a week off of school each year because they are preparing the same lesson they taught for the last 15 years for the upcoming school year. They have to check and see all the new changes in things like history and math that they have to integrate in their plans.

Yeah, catching an extra cold every other year or so is brutal. Hopefully it will coincides with one of very few vacay days.

So why aren't you riding that gravy train, mickey? Either you aren't qualified, or you don't want to. Either way, it's showing that the law of supply and demand works, because they either need to pay to attract qualified folk or to overcome the aversion of people who aren't excited about doing it. Or, you know, both.

garick, I was planning on shutting the convo down since 2 people asked for it to be shut down, but since you are a mod I will respond. I know I am only 3 of the 15 posts on the topic, but from experience I know that it isn't always the one who started the convo or the whole group that keeps it going that gets punished on 2+2.

I would consider being a teacher in another life (if in theory I had another life), but in my current life I am probably too old to really take advantage of the compensation package for teachers. Many of their pensions require 20 (25, 28, etc) something years in the field (and I have hopes of retiring before then) to get the full pension and the pension is a massive part of their compensation package.

I also have a job that I enjoy and I like the people I work with. I think one can say an occupations is overpaid even though that person doesn't want that job.

In response to your claim of supply and demand working I would say that we should pay teachers more than they are currently making and removing pensions for all new teachers (which many schools have already done) and reducing the pensions for current teachers. By reducing the pension of current teachers I mean no longer allowing them to accumulate more years in the pension but still give them what they have already earned and instead put that money towards a defined contribution account like a 403b/401k - so the current teachers would still get a pension (but less than if we didn't make this change) and they would also have a 403b where the school is contributing to each year. I think this higher salary, but lower total compensation package would actually attract more people to teaching.

txdome, be careful. Rundownhouse is reporting people around here for anything political talk and he stretches what qualifies. Abortion is a very political issue.

Okay, I'm not trying to get you banned. How about your opinion on Lia Thomas winning the Woman's swimming title. Surely that won't go into anything political.

I get that you're joking, but I find the idea of value vs compensation interesting.

I worked in software for my career. Did I provide value in line with my compensation?

Well, if we mean, "did the organization make $X more due to my software, while paying me $Y, where Y < X", then lol, no.

From the perspective of "did I provide value in line or above my compensation, based on how developers are compensated?" then, hell, yes. I always took my job and responsibilities seriously, and never searched out more money--I couldn't spend the money I made. If the employer offered more because they liked the job I was doing, great, of course I took it.

I don't get how some people can justify their salaries when it gets into the many hundreds of thousands or millions--there's (almost) no way they provide that much value to the organization (it seems like to me--there may be rare exceptions, I suppose).

Needless to say, when it comes to vote my shares, I'm always against the "motion to approve executive compensation."

I guess it shouldn't piss me off, but does, that rebel and bahbah both are supposed to be contained but are posting willy nilly.
