that youtube did not explain why it's a pair of pants, but managed to piss me off by saying that pants are a garment that covers your legs with sleeves. They're called legs!

And at this point we've got back to why it is called a "pair." Each individual leg was once a separate pair of hosen that tied on to your underwear (or "pants"), instead of being sewn together into one garment. We can see still see the derivation in the name "pantyhose" which is two hosen and a pair of panties all in one garment.
