Yes, kill the kids who like a piece of fiction more than you've liked anything in your life...

Ok well I wasn't exactly advocated their death. I just don't care to be involved. The series was great and all, but I have no need to revisit it as is done outwardly in various forms by others. It's just as bad as if someone wouldn't shut up about Star Wars, except it's Harry Potter, so it's cute and rebellious

I'd say, unless I'm using the wrong word. I think that's part of what people get out of it at least.

My daughter styles herself as a Slytherin, which is hard to get mad at.

Harry Potter never captured my imagination. I wanted to like it but it just doesn't get me there. I've read two of them to my daughter and am waiting until she gets older to move on to the third as I've been advised it may be too dark for her age. She loves it but I merely tolerate it. Main issue I have is there doesn't seem to be any real indication Harry and his friends are particularly good people other than they are the protagonists, and for the first two books at least they are not really all that well written IMO.

For nerdy kid/adult crossover rebellion give me A Series of Unfortunate Events.

And yes, my tween book reviews itt should piss you off.

I think my beef with Harry Potter is essentially a problem with modern adult readers. The series was a catalyst for this "YA novels but for adults" thing which has now entirely saturated modern literature.

People like to pretend it's nostalgia or a special thing that "others just don't get." But there's nothing to get, it's simply an adult population convincing themselves they're well read because they read teen books.

I read them as the fifth one was coming out, because people whose opinions I trusted liked them. I did too. The movies also. Have to disagree with your point here.

That was aimed more at the "adults reading YA" trend, although Harry Potter definitely falls into the same. It's less about Harry Potter and more about Dunning–Kruger adults believing they're well read when they exclusively read YA. Harry seems to encompass this trend as it heralded a huge flood of YA properties that now saturate books/films/television.

HP is certainly only age appropriate for about the age Harry is in the books - 11 in the first book, 17 in the last. I thought the writing improved as the books went on. Plot was more complex and the characters were more developed. My major issue with the series was the magic world made no sense. There was no reason for magic to exist and it didn't do anything other than be over the top of the "real" world.

I'm ruined for books by the internet now. Much as I love the Net, that kinda pisses me off.

I think the internet/smartphones cause a lot of unintentional reading fatigue. This, in turn, leads to less books being read.

I'm an avid book reader, but I definitely lose the desire after a long day of work/internet browsing. Audiobooks help a lot.

When people (like sports announcers) refer to someone lying on their back as "lying prone". They're lying supine. Prone is when you're on your belly.
