Microsoft.

I don't have any Apple products and don't use Facebook (though I'd have to start playing Scrabble with my wife if she couldn't Wordscraper and Lexulous). As for Google, there are replacements for their stuff.

As a person who has made a living through internet research, Google isn't the same as any other search engine and it never has been. There's a reason it's so ubiquitous - the algorithm it uses changed the search game entirely when it came out, and it continues to improve.

looking at "search quality" scores, google is still a ways ahead of bing, but bing is actually doing pretty good and is at quality scores that google was at a few years ago, so they are making progress.

now if you have to use a search engine *other* than google or bing, well, you should give it a try and see how that goes. Not to mention, gmail/hotmail, google maps/bing maps, google docs/office online, etc.

Exactly! I ain't everybody, but I could do everything I need to do with a Linux OS netbook and Google. In fact, I ought to do that next time - hella cheap.

All MS applications I'm aware of are perfectly fungible, including in most cases completely free alternatives.

If we assume that the void left by Google can't be filled by other companies stealing its intellectual property then Google is kind of irreplaceable. It just excels in so many of services far beyond the competition.

Plus I think we can pretty confidently predict some future big things from Google that would not be pulled off by any of the existing competitors.

Actually the 360 + Xbox Live is the most "irreplaceable" thing MS produces imo.

If you didn't have facebook, you wouldn't be able to feed your friends' virtual farm animals and your friends would come and kill you while you were sleeping.

Oh, another reason for Microsoft: .NET framework

I may be overestimating the amount of people this has an impact on since this is OOT and all, but Hold'Em Manager is written for .NET.

I totally misread the poorly worded question and would like an exemption from this banning you recommend.

Should have left microsoft off the pole imo

Although I guess most of those answers would ship over to google. Or maybe Fly is right even though FB personally has nothing to do with my life atm.

Once we get to that level, some of Chrome's architecture has some connection to Safari and thus Apple. I have no idea what Facebook is built on, nor do I know what Gchat's lineage looks like, or whatever. I think we have to keep this to branded retail products. Do I have to pick Microsoft to continue to be able to use ActiveX? Apple and Microsoft probably have all sorts of random patents for all sorts of stuff, for all I know my car will stop working if I pick Google.

I still think it's Facebook.

What OS are you planning on running these free alternatives on?

Linux, obviously. There are plenty of Microsoft haters who already do this.

5 Years ago facebook was how you communicated with your college friends and myspace was how you communicated with your townie and work friends. Why couldn't we go back to myspace?

Whoever mentioned cisco has an excellent point. Although, I believe google has been using/building their own proprietary hardware quite a while now.

if you only see google as a search engine then you will surely not choose it above the others.

Personal Use?
Have you tried using Ubuntu recently? I put it [10.04] on my parent's computer recently and they haven't the slightest clue that its not an MS product...email/internet...check/check.

Work Environment?
Any OS that can run a browser (any browser) is all that will be necessary (cloud computing is the future).

Why doesn't it count? It has nothing to do with Microsoft, right?

I'm also not sure why the .NET framework is a big deal. If you're not allowed to use Windows products - not being able to use the .NET framework isn't that painful either.

I also think it's fair to say that you can use products produced by people using the companies products for development type purposes. For example if somebody gives up Google I would expect them to still be able to use an ISP that happened to use Google DNS.

This is actually a pretty tough question. Facebook is obv last. I agree with guy who said MS's most irreplaceable product is 360+live. I would actually say Apple. Their products are the company I would least trust someone else to replace. Google 2nd.

Well, it's a different question if you talk about the company totally disappearing vs you just not being able to use their products (ie there isn't a huge rush of replacements streaming in).

My relatively uninformed opinion is that Google search is the #1 search engine because nobody else can make anything as good, whereas Microsoft, Apple, and FB's #1 products are only at #1 because they did something that others could also do but they just did it first or marketed it better. So I picked Google.

Microsoft has really come on strong as of late. I've had nothing but great experiences with Vista and XP. All the macs I have used have been buggy as hell.

The 360 is an incredible product but PS3 is probably not much worse.

Google and Facebook are cool but there are things out there 95% as good. Apple, I don't get at all but other people like blowing their money on that crap.
