Probably, but Magnus has said he might not bother defending his title depending on who the challenger is, in which case the top two finishers would play each other

I only know he has been top dog for a while. Why is he potentially refusing to play? Out of arrogance, boredom, hatred for one of the contenders, or some other reason?

Think it was on The Breakdown poker podcast, but heard this recently. Details probably wrong, but here goes.

Someone (Liv Boeree?) had a thread going on some site asking for the best chess-related pickup lines.

Supposedly Magnus Carlsen posted:

Spoiler:
"Hi, I'm Magnus Carlsen"

world chess championship is pretty brutal preparation and schedule and he's dominated everyone in his generation for years and I guess doesn't see the point. He said he'd only play the new 18 year old kid on the block who was ranked #2 when he first made the comment, right after he won last time. Most people don't believe he wouldn't play though.

Did he really "dominate" in the WCs? He mopped the floor with Nepo, but Caruana and Karjakin took him to tiebreaks.

Show me where I said he dominated in WCs. He's the undisputed best chess player of his generation. Caruana looked like he might be the next Magnus for a minute, but he couldn't keep it up. From his statement it seems he lacks the motivation to try to win another WC against the same cohort he's already shown he can beat.

While you didn't say it, I'm saying he didn't do it.

While he has dominated overall, he very nearly lost the WC twice. So it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for him to say there is no point. As good as he is, a successful title defense is not a lock for him.

If he is just not up for all the prep, I get that. If he thinks, "Well if I just did the prep, I'm sure I'd beat whatever patzer they put in front of me. But I just don't want to get arsed up to prep". I'm not completely sure about that. And I'm a yuuge Carlsen fanboy.

Of course a successful title defense is no lock, but he's been #1 in ELO rankings for 11 years. At some point he has to think, "What else is there left to do?"

Always pass on the obvious joke.

Always.

Dr. Rick's "we all see it" is universal.

Making money.

It's not like tennis or golf where the top guy is rich beyond belief. There isn't near as much money in chess. He's leaving a lot on the table.

"Obvious joke" and "reason to chuckle" are generally different things.

I like the pint glass FWIW.

After being thoroughly and completely demolished by Tom, you can find me Down on the Corner.

Probably not. I'm guessing he is on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, with Jackson Browne and Glenn Frye. Meantime, I'm on a corner while stuck in old Lodi again.

He may have been outrun, but yours looked better crossing the finish line. Kudos!
