My gf is from TX. She gets all riled up if I suggest Texas is anything but its own distinct region, but that's because they have a lot of the Quebec Separatist complex down there. Thus, I deliberately lump TX in with The South whenever I feel like poking fun at her.
As she rightly should. Don't lump us in with anybody.

I hear a lot of people proclaim they are from "Northern Virginia" or "NOVA" which is cute. I find this funny. Is the southern part of Virginia that god-awful that they feel the need to quash the thought some stranger might have when they say they are from Virginia? Like, saying "Virginia" "oh yeah, what part?" "the northern part" just won't cut it. You gotta let them know before the thought ever enters their mind.

I get "Norcal" seeing as the state of California is huge but is "NOVA" really necessary?

phb is going to phb.

people will say they are from northern virginia because it identifies where they are from. northern virginia is basically an extended suburb of washington d.c. but saying you're from washington d.c. would probably mean something totally different.

It's a lot like Kentucky. Louisville and Lexington are NOTHING like the eastern/western parts of the state.

When I tell people I'm from KY I make it a point to let them know I'm from Louisville and not a town out of Next of Kin b/c unfortunately that's what most people think when they hear Kentucky.

They stick to cousins in Louisville and Lexington. Brothers and sisters are off limits.

Where do you go, Evangel? I went to Missouri State in Springfield, and the campus was completely secular. There are definitely a lot of religious people in the area, but I also grew up in Springfield, and religion's impact on my everyday life was zilch.

And if you're talking about Columbia here, I'm speechless.

The key to Missouri is staying within about 80 miles North or South of I-70. Then some parts along the Mississippi river can be quaint.

But if you get too far north or south of I-70 it's either farms or hillbillies that have spilled over from northern Arkansas.

The Ozarks belong to Missouri every bit as much as Arkansas, blower.

It's a distinctive culture that I'm proud to claim as my own.

Native East Texan, and I agree with this. Couldn't vote for this reason, because I don't find either map accurate. Also, I lived in Louisiana for many years and don't consider New Orleans a part of the South. It's just a land apart.

Edit, I live in NW Arkansas now, and it's definitely not the south, but I think southern Arkansas could qualify.

I guess I just don't think it's a geographical thing, it's a mentality thing.

I grew up on ice tea. Not sure I ever put sugar in it until I moved to Atlanta and discovered "Sweet Tea" is served everywhere and Ludlow Porch, RIP, made a career on the radio promoting the virtues of sweet tea and how to get squirrels out of your attic.

Sugar was for hot tea when I was growing up.

I'm from New England and I consider anywhere where people wear cowboy hats the South. and that includes 40 minutes west of Worcester (not including the pike.) You'd be surprised to know it's not that hard to find a Confederate flag in MA.

This can be used to your advantage.

When I lived in Atlanta and bums would hit me up for change, I'd often say something like, OK, but first I'd like to talk with you about my lord and savior Jesus Christ.

No bum wants a quarter bad enough to listen to that

Diddy is right. Fayetteville AR isn't any more like the rest of AR (South) than Austin is like the rest of Texas. An Austin hippie would get his **** stomped in Fort Worth.

The Nine Nations of North America

Look closely at the map and you'll see he has South Florida as part of the Caribbean.

He also separates NOVA from the rest of Virginia so maybe they have a point.

Heh - he's gut the Rust Belt as part of the Foundry so he'd definitely separated it from the rest of the midwest "breadbasket".

He's got Dixie extending too far West. He's got Dallas and Houston basically in it and almost as far west as Austin. Not to mention too far north with St. Louis in it which is ridiculous. Really, the big cities along the Mississippi river are not "Dixie". That's St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans. Pretty damn accurate though overall. He's got Mexamerica pretty much nailed.
