I used to wonder whether anyone read any of my posts. A lot of times it felt like I was shouting down an empty hallway and it kind of sucked. I still decided to continue reading & posting because I decided that learning about new things and expressing myself was more important than feeling like others listen to me or recognize my existence.

I'm in favor of the big tent OOT vision. I've been pondering the concept of Reunification of the off topic forums, (which the exception of BBV4L because on-site daycare is a must have these days.) I've come to like the idea more and more, but I doubt that everyone would be willing to get along.

I read and post here when it entertains me. I'm confident I'll never be part of the cool kids crowd, but I'm OK with that for the most part. There are posters I've become fond of over time.

I wish that more of the lurkers would participate, both those that have spoken up in this thread, and those of you who are just reading, (insert Mom look.)

It is tough to come up with an original OP with so much forum history. I'm not one for spilling my guts much on a public forum.

Also, it seemed like the front page had the same thing on it for about six months until recently.

I like the LC thread. It's perfect for a guy like me. I like the community of regulars here as a great place to bull**** during the day in between work or whatever it is I'm doing, but I don't have interest in most of the threads that are started and not much else to share besides the occasional ball-busting one-liner.

The reason I don't post more content is simple: I have enough differing opinions and tastes from the "regular" consensus (to say nothing of the stoopid noobs) that I don't feel like sharing them with a bunch of people who will jump down my throat for them. I still get trolled on the forums about stuff that happened in my life five, even ten years ago. I have no interest in opening myself up to that sort of thing again, particularly to a group of people whose advice is only relevant insofar as they share my tastes, values, and goals, and know what they're talking about. My skin's thicker than it used to be, but no matter how assured I am that I am not an idiot and a weirdo, I still don't want to hear a bunch of people tell me I am.

But if that's why I don't start my own threads, it has something to do with why I don't post much in other people's threads, either. I'm just not that interested in other people's silly girl problems or roommate feuds or quibbling over total bull****. It seems to me that many of people's advice threads are for problems that are relatively trivial and petty, which leads to a similar level of discussion about them. Or if not that, maybe it's just that the 15th or 20th time around they're not as interesting to read about anymore.

As somebody who does enjoy jumping on a bad new thread and yelling at people, I will say that it's at least my intent to only to that to bad new threads.

If a newbie started a thread that showed some effort, and didn't ask a painfully stupid question, I know/hope that I'd try and give it a legit answer. I think you can find a few examples of this.

I really think at times it's as simple as "OOT is mean to new posters because the vast majority new posters are terrible".

As for cres's issue with "blogging"- it seems like he's missing the whole point of the LC thread. It should exactly be for me to say "here's a weird thing with my gas cap" because that's not something that gets its own thread. The "no blogging" rule basically should point people who want to do stuff like that to the LC thread.

Idk, I just always assume people are enjoying my posts, even if they don't respond, because I typically post pretty good and funny. I can see why if someone was stupid or kind of dull they might worry about it, though.

There are definitely not a lot of new OP's in OOT. But there are still tons more then in The Lounge and EDF some of those threads have been on the front page for years.

Also, the uptick started in Nov/Dec. That's way before the draft, right? That's Henry.

Two different axes.

That could well be the beginning of the surge, but it's unclear to me how much of that trend would be easily visible if the draft weren't bringing it up in the last segment.

Al,

reg = anyone in the top 100 posters by volume.

This is obv debatable, but I dont think there is a reasonable definition of reg that isnt going to see that big split over the past 2 years

microbet,

sorry, wasnt totally clear in labelling. Left hand y axis is posts right hand is OPs.
