Of course not. I would say on average they tip less, but far from never. I would never screen anyone out.

Well, as much as everyone hates to admit it, much of what we do in society and how we act is based on norms. What other people around us do tends to shape what we do, this is especially true when it comes to tipping.

If no one tipped bartenders for a bottle of beer I wouldn't either, but everyone does, so I do to. If everyone tipped they guy working the counter at the 7-11 then I would to, but no one does so I dont either. A lot of it just comes down to not wanting to come off like an asshat, which is basic human nature.

In my experience, people at ballgames people don't tip the vendors, at least that's what I was 99% sure of up until about an hour ago. Now that that idea has been challenged I am going to make a deliberate effort to see if I'm wrong about that by talking to and observing other people. I think that's pretty fair.

I'm sure you could. Sorry for answering your question I guess...

Besides, if his friends don't tip, don't you think that him asking his friends if they tip might put the idea to do so in their heads? Is that a bad thing?

--------

And if it didn't matter what other people thought/did, why didn't you answer with the same tone when someone asked what percent of people tipped?

Why don't you just do what's right and logical? Social norms have often been pretty ****ed up.

Because he didn't ask it in a way that implied that it would shape his thinking. I never said it was wrong to ask his friends if they tip, just wrong to let their opinions completely dictate his actions.

Because society says waiters/waitresses should get tipped, their wages are (usually) less, even below minimum wage. That's what society dictated.

What if you were paid (just throwing a number out) $25/hr and not expecting tips, and that was built into the price of the product? Society has dictated this setup, with the higher wage and no tips.

It would be horrible for the waiter/ess for someone to go against the norms, I don't think you'd argue that. Going against the norms in the second case would be kinda bad for the consumers (and owner of the business).

Why go against the social norms so everyone's on the same page?

Honest question...did you miss

"I'm open to the fact that I may be wrong here, and may even change my behavior based on what I find."

after he said he'd ask his friends about it in his post, or was it added later?

Of course, I could be misinterpreting what you're saying, because your first sentence seems to completely contradict the second

--------------

Oh crap, this is a tipping tangent in the sticky thread. Forgot about that. I'll stop participating in the tangent.

I'm not arguing that all social norms are bad, often times what's right and what is the social norm coincide. But not thinking for yourself and doing only what society tells you is just stupid.

Yeah you're misinterpreting it. I was just saying that when he asked what percentage of people tip, I answered him honestly believing that it was just an innocent question.

Generally yes, but again, for the most part if the social norms are for you not to be tipped, your remuneration will come directly from your employer and be reflected in the price of the product. If norms are for you to be tipped, then you'll be paid less (and people should tip). Things get a bit mixed up when you cross the two. If everyone has 'agreed' to the second case, then that's what everyone should do. Likewise, it ought to be acceptable not to tip in the first case--and there are a lot of jobs like that.

Essentially, what I'm saying is that the 'social norms' combine (when everyone is following them) to appropriately compensate someone for their work.

Pretty surprised to hear some of you think tipping ballpark hawkers isn't standard. They bust their ass walking up and down stairs all day if that isn't a tipped position I don't know what is.

Ok, fair enough, I did misinterpret it. And I think it was an honest question--I was actually interested in the answer too. (in an honest fashion)

Wait, you're not supposed to tip for a beer at the concession stand? I've always left a buck or two and never even gave it a second thought. You especially tip the beer guy in the sands, he's delivering the drink right to your seat FFS.

I'm apparently less generous than average for this forum when tipping, but I've never not tipped a ballpark hawker. I certainly tip them more generously than waiters/bartenders, because they're carrying heavy **** up and down the stairs for 3 hours ffs...

Wow, these clubs don't pay them a dime when they probably bring the club ~$150/hr in profit? This discussion came up last time I was at a game. Don't they pay the concession workers? How could they pay them for standing behind a counter, but not the guys with beer on their back? I was the only one who had ever heard of tipping these guys, but I had always looked at it as something on top of a decent hourly wage to reward them for lugging heavy **** around in 100 degree heat. Didn't know it was their sole source of income.

when i did it we got 55 cents for every can we sold plus tip... could usually sell 250 cans or so in a good game so the money is not bad.. but tips are standard.. you get them like 75% of the time.. and if you stiff the vendor good luck getting served the rest of the game

Not tipping the beer man lugging around a cooler while running up and down flights of stairs means you really are a jerk.

Spoiler:
Really. A big jerk.
