Double Down's stories about how terrible customers are at letting waiters do their job well and what a good waiter would do in certain situations are making me think I tip way too much at casual dining type places. I basically always tip 20-25% plus round up to the nearest dollar and I don't even do the things that annoy waiters. Maybe I should dial that back to 15%? I thought 20% was fairly standard, but all I ever hear from waiters is complaints about how little people tip and how they get 10-15% all the time so maybe I should bring my tipping more in line with the masses. Anyone have thoughts on this? Tip less if you are a good customer or if your server does their job, but only at the minimal level required?

Hair cut place I went to had half price cuts in the early morning. Didn't really know about it, but it cost ten bucks. I had twenty-five for the cut and tip and was surprised that it was half price. Ended up just giving her the 25 I intended to spend so she got a decent tip, larger than the cost of the cut.

Do what you want. It all averages out if you have a competent server. It really depends where the location is though. I assume you live in a state where they actually pay minimum wage plus tip.

If this was in a state where its all based on tip and no wage if tips cover that wage, keep on tipping high, they def need it.

I worked as a server for 5 years. I am not picky at all and usually just do the basic. Order food, receive food, eat than leave. I tip the standard. I wish I could tip less because its so damn easy but there is an expectation that society has set for eating out. If I don't like it I shouldn't eat out.

Do what you want just dont go below the standard unless you had sub par service.

I was the only married member of the party & had been married for about 18 months at this point & was not going to go without her. Also, the groom was in MY bridal party & attended our rehearsal dinner. He did attend alone however cuz his gf at the time (now fiancé at the time of this story) had a previous engagement but she was invited.

So I made him aware that if my wife could not attend, I would not be able to go. He repeated that it was for the bridal party only so I didn't go. The wedding was a few days after and he didn't say 2 words to me all day. A few days a after the wedding he came by my house saying I broke wedding etiquette for not honoring his request. At the time I didn't know if this was true (it turns out its not) but I told him I didn't care and for $50 he shouldn't have cared either.

We have hardly spoken since. This was about 8 years ago...
Sounds like he has some growing up to do.

Probably something like 18% if non-scumbag, and it averages out to 15% when you include scumbags.

My old employer, Copps grocery store(managed by Roundy's, they also own Pick N Save and Metro Market) decided to take soda vending machines out of the break room, because they were too expensive to maintain.

Whats the proper tip for a las vegas buffet? Does it depend on venue?

All server does is clear plates and refill drinks.

I'd say $1/person. Maybe a buck or 2 more if you especially got a ton of refills, or if it's one of the nicer buffets.

I hope there was a grocery store nearby for the poor, thirsty employees.

Buffet servers probably do more work than a normal waiter I'd say. They aren't clearing the amount of plates that one would normally have at a restaurant, but probably 3-4x more. Vegas buffets, the good ones at least, are often time 30-40 for lunch and 40-60 for dinner. Price matters between tips for regular restaurants, I'm assuming they should for nicer buffets as well. That said, I still only tip $10 for a family of four and $20 if they were particularly good, just because it seems to be on the normal/generous side.

A buffet server can handle a lot more tables though.
Stingiest thing you've seen someone do Quote

That's true. I'm guessing those tables are occupied for longer though.

I do tip less. For a check of $200, I'm usually tipping $10 and sometimes $20. I just think the $1/person is not nearly enough.

It is rare that I have gone to a casino buffet and felt I even got $1 worth of service. Usually have to wait way too long to get a drink, and good luck ever getting a refill. I wish they would just have self-serve drinks too.

Buffets are all disgusting. Nothing tastes good after sitting around under a heat-lamp/on-ice for 30 minutes.

Even at a high-end buffet - if I'm going to pay for high-quality food I don't want to completely mix genres that should never go together. Life is too short - go to a real restaurant.
