And I wouldn't say that it doesn't. I just think it's a complete fallacy to treat all this like it's some new thing we cannot comprehend. It's much harder to ignore, now that the proof lingers, and the bullying can be tracked, but the way some people write about it, like, "OH MY GOD kids now are ****ing demons!" just because their awfulness is more easily exposed than it used to be, is the wrong way to look at the problem.

Damn, hadn't heard about this before today. Just googled for Steubenville Ohio and the relevant links were at the top of the search results, must make the citizens really proud.

Perhaps it would be good to put these simple rape-prevention tips on the wall of the football teams locker room:

Quote:
Ten rape prevention tips:

1. Don’t put drugs in women’s drinks.

2. When you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.

3. If you pull over to help a woman whose car has broken down, remember not to rape her.

4. If you are in an elevator and a woman gets in, don’t rape her.

5. When you encounter a woman who is asleep, the safest course of action is to not rape her.

6. Never creep into a woman’s home through an unlocked door or window, or spring out at her from between parked cars, or rape her.

7. Remember, people go to the laundry room to do their laundry. Do not attempt to molest someone who is alone in a laundry room.

8. Use the Buddy System! If it is inconvenient for you to stop yourself from raping women, ask a trusted friend to accompany you at all times.

9. Carry a rape whistle. If you find that you are about to rape someone, blow the whistle until someone comes to stop you.

10. Don’t forget: Honesty is the best policy. When asking a woman out on a date, don’t pretend that you are interested in her as a person; tell her straight up that you expect to be raping her later. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the woman may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape her.

My co-worker recently created this list, inspired by sites like this*. As I was reading, I couldn’t decide if I should laugh or be horrified by the reality that violence prevention tips are always aimed at what the targeted person should do (judgment strongly implied) to protect themselves.

In the past two weeks, headlines about rape have flooded the news—CBS Reporter Recounts a ‘Merciless’ Assault, Congo study sets estimates of rape much higher , Peace Corps volunteer speaks out on rape. And, of course, IMF Chief charged with rape. I am glad to see people speaking out about rape. But raising awareness isn’t enough. How do we actually change perpetrators’ thoughts and convince them not to rape?

If you experienced rape as a reporter, a Peace Corps volunteer, a war survivor, a hotel maid, or by your partner, you don’t need rape prevention tips. It is the rapist and the culture around us that excuses, supports, and looks away that we must change.

More victim-blaming bull****. It's beyond out of hand, most vocal people don't even realize they are reinforcing it, toting the ludicrously ignorant "she's asking/asked for it" attitude.

Aren't those sentences very lenient?

I know they're minimums but I would expect more.

They were tried as juveniles, so the sentences were much shorter.

Serena Williams take on it.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/tennis...212112851.html

"We watch the news for a while, and the infamous Steubenville rape case flashes on the TV—two high school football players raped a 16-year-old, while other students watched and texted details of the crime. Serena just shakes her head. "Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don't know. I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don't take drinks from other people. She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

unreal

Just to be clear, I've snipped some of the quote to make it clear what she (not the interviewer) seemed to say.

Ugh: unreal.

Those poor, poor boys had their lives ruined because that girl let herself get so drunk.

It's ok to criticize a 16 year old girl for binge drinking. You can do that and still reserve a special place in hell for rapists. Everything isn't black and white.

Sure, but the Serena quote started with "Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don't know. I'm not blaming the girl, but"
This is not just criticizing underage drinking, it's blaming the victim instead of the rapists.

It gets me when athletes give an honest answer than roasted about it. Its why agents tell athletes never comment on anything.

This is a case of bad decisions made all around. Ultimately the boys are responsible for their criminal actions but her point about 16 year old girl getting drunk is that she put herself in a dangerous position.

I am shocked the boys were not tried as adults

Again, read the first two sentences. It would have been very easy for her to condemn the rapists and still talk about how it's important for women to be careful in what are unfortunately dangerous situations. Instead, she questions the fairness of their punishment then supports it with several sentences on the victims actions.

People who say offensive or ignorant things deserve pushback. Hopefully Serena evaluates her thought process and grows from the experience, a la Tim Hardaway.

Why should we expect serana williams to have an intelligent opinion on anything? Because she hits a tennis ball? The worst part about her quote is that anyone even pays it any attention.
