Link to thread in the video games forum <--

360 Arcade: $160, 360 Premium: $260, 360 Elite: $320, PS3 80GB: $320.

I thought this to be of sufficient value for the general OOT population to link it. If so, enjoy! If not, delete!

Would anyone recommend getting a PS3 as my default Blu-Ray player? I don't have a Blu-Ray (nor any discs) but since I'm not as interested in getting BR movies, would it be an adequate way to watch BR movies and also be able to play PS3 at the same time? Come to think of it, I'm not much of a gamer either (I haven't owned a video game system since Sega Genesis I think), but I figure kill two birds with one stone... ?

The PS3 is a very good BR player from what I understand. Comparable blu ray players can be had for under $300 pretty easily, but if you have any desire to play games, getting a PS3 may be the best option.

PS3 BR is great. I have yet to see a non ps3 BR player that I could tell a difference on. Also PS3 is better gaming system as well. If want a BR player and will play a game every now and then PS3 is highly recommended. Also obv perks of being able to store music, pictures, videos, and movies on it.

PJ, to cite one example Criterion uses the PS3 as its player in a screening room:

The list of other gear that Criterion selected for its theater includes a Denon AVR-3808CI receiver, an Axiom Epic 80/500 speaker system, an Anchor Bay DVDO VP50 Pro video processor with HD SDI option, and a Sony PlayStation 3 for Blu-ray Disc playback. The whole thing is controlled by a Logitech Harmony 890 remote.

The PS3 is a reference BD player against which set-tops are compared from places like CNET to AVS Forum.

I think it's a fine main. The only "knocks" I tend to see against it are the inability to bitstream HD audio codecs (it still decodes and plays them), the requiring of add-on receivers to use an IR universal remote, and a lack of visual integration with conventional home theater equipment. These are all minor, IMO, and I mained mine until I moved gaming to a bedroom TV and got a set-top Panasonic.

I think it's a no-brainer if you're in the market for a BD player and have a remote interest in either games or media serving.

Netflix charges a flat additional $1/month fee to add Blu-Ray to any account. I don't buy many BDs, but I watch a lot.
