That hosted webcast has got to be one of the most annoying things I've ever watched.

The technical broadcast is much better. All of mission control calls and none of the BS filler

In an explosion of fire a rocket ship lifts into the sky, travels through the speed of sound, delivers a package to a space station hovering over the Earth and then settles perfectly down on a floating platform in the middle of the ocean and you're concerned with the webcast?

I was amazed when I saw my first television, lol.

Not to be a nit, but the Rocket landed back on the drone ship long before the payload made it to the ISS.

The insane amount of innovation he has his hands in is mind boggling. Definetely a great mind of our time

I don't get what you guys are all excited about. The engineering tolerances for spacecraft are tiny fractions of a millimeter, and the first stage landed WAY off center by those standards.

They have openings in Texas for engineers. I'm applying!

And that's what I want to see. The science, not some 20 something hipsters babbling on while a fake crowd cheers every minor moment so loudly that I can't even hear what they are saying.

I will make sure to watch the technical feed next time and avoid the propaganda show.

Interesting, but I didn't get that vibe. It could be because I have usually been surrounded by rowdy twelve year old seventh graders when I was watching stuff like this, lol.

Yeah there was nothing fake about the cheers or the crowds themselves. They where legitimately ecstatic at what they where witnessing

Just landed another one a few minutes ago...this was MUCH more difficult than the previous two landings and was not expected to be successful.

(careful, loud volume)

Make sure to watch til the end with the chant.

Why do they land them on barges in the ocean instead of in the desert or whatever?

Pretty awesome week for SpaceX with this success and the announcement of the 2018 Mars mission, which if successful I think would be the biggest thing, by far, ever landed on Mars.

EDIT: They land them on the ocean because rockets launch a little bit up, but mostly east in order to achieve orbit. So by the time the first stage has completed its job, it's out over the ocean and moving east really fast. So landing back on land would require turning around and flying all the way back, which would take a lot of fuel. Easier to just slow down and land in the ocean.

They have returned one first stage to the Cape successfully. If there is enough fuel left after separation, they can return to land.

adding to what boboman said; it also depends if it is a LEO (low earth orbit) or (GTO) geosyncronous transfer orbit mission AND the amount of payload. If the payload is low enough then F9 has enough fuel reserves to boost back to Cape Canaveral and lands on a landing pad there.

Today was a big deal b/c it was a GTO mission which means it must land on the barge and it is coming in at around twice(I think) the velocity of LEO mission.

Re: bringing back the rocket to land - what is the stability/potential for large error? IOW, one good thing about the ocean is there are no buildings and people there.

Pretty much any error will be a large error, and they have had several failures.

Now that they have started landing successfully I think they will have fewer and fewer failures. It seems like once they accomplish something it is repeatable.

I believe they've scrubbed at least one launch because a boat came too close to their droneship.
