Great publicity stunt. Too bad it's at the cost of North Korea, but who cares about them, right?

Quote:
Sony executives and distribution partners around the world were worried that the movie was too offensive, "desperately unfunny," and worst of all, starred James Franco.

Emails sent from UK Sony Pictures exec Peter Taylor to president of Sony Pictures Releasing International Steven O'Dell are particularly harsh, describing the comedy as a "misfire," "unfunny and repetitive," with "a level of realistic violence that would be shocking in a horror movie." Taylor holds one of the film's co-stars in particularly low regard: "James Franco proves once again that irritation is his strong suit which is a shame because the character could have been appealing and funny out of his hands."

Nobody would have watched the crapfest otherwise.

No, nobody cares about NK. At least not the small group of elites actually permitted to enjoy Internet access.

Also, lol @ this being a publicity stunt. The movie would have done fine. People know what they're getting out of a Rogen/Franco comedy by now and past ones have dragged in $100m on similar low-medium budgets. This one might have done better still on the strength of This is the End last year. Either way, Sony doesn't control theater chains.

That the movie probably sucks is almost irrelevant and a given anyway. I predict 4 or 5 quick laughs in the entire movie, with some weed smoking, some bromancing, and mostly a boring movie that should have had Danny McBride in it.

The hack is obviously real and not done by Sony for publicity, but I don't buy the whole North Korea and ''We gave in to their demands, but after raking in publicity for a while we're releasing it after all, look at us sticking up for freedom!'' narrative.

Don't believe that Sony is behind the hack, although they certainly have exploited it perfectly. After a few theaters get cold feet, you shut it down, now you have a bunch of people outraged, even if they had no interest in the film. TONS of free press. Then Sony can show how brave they are and release it, and people will go view it as part of a patriotic duty. Have a limited release that sells out everywhere. All the chicken **** theaters who cancelled will see no one gets blown up and tickets sell like mad. Follow up with a wide release and they profit huge.
