I think everything about this movie looks pretty awesome, I assumed when I saw the trailer everyone would be all fanboy about it and am pretty surprised to see otherwise...but I also loved studio60 when i found it on hulu last year, and am jonesing for wall street 2 (and Ive never been on facebook/had an account)

Good thread. I've shifted from not caring enough about the movie to even look it up on IMDB to wanting to see it after hearing one word: Fincher.

With any luck this will be as good as The Game.

Aaron Sorkin is a terrible hack and it's sad that so many people think otherwise.

Unless you mean because eisenberg isn't actually awkward in real life and thus is actually acting, no.

I don't think everything he's done is great, and from what I've read he's not a great person- but Sports Night and The first seasons of The West Wing (and The American President) are all really excellent.

David Fincher is also pretty much a hack.

Dids- Those things you mentioned were made like 10 years ago.

And only one of them is actually not terrible.

A Few Good Men remains very, very watchable. The West Wing does not. Sports Night is real hit or miss. Sorkin's penchant for moralizing directly at the audience makes Season 5 of The Wire look understated.

I'm also a huge Sorkin fan but don't know what to expect. I like almost everything he's ever written, however I didn't really like the book from which the story has been adapted.

Zodiac is incredibly ambitious and just misses, but has a lot of incredible set pieces and i'd much rather watch it then most formulaic historical dramas. Fincher isn't a must watch director for me, but he makes consistently good movies and has shown flashes of brilliance.

I haven't seen TWW, but I liked Sports Night eventhough the writing was often too cute/bantery.

i'm not a fincher fan (nor a sorkin fan, nor a facebook fan, so why am i in this thread?), but i didn't like zodiac. it was way too long. i can't say i hated it, or that i regret watching it, or that it was poorly made, but there's a limit to how long your serial killer movie can be, and 2 hours and 30 minutes is way past that.

I agree with this save for The West Wing. I think it's a show where Sorkin's issues (the moralizing) actually really work. When Sports Night failed, and where
Studio 60 bombed, was in taking these relatively trivial worlds and trying to make them Important. On TWW, I think he pulled that off, because the stakes and situations suited his attitude.

I think the bigger point though is that even if you aren't a huge fan of Fincher or Sorkin, this movie is not Pirates of the Silicone valley and shouldn't be dismissed as such. If you realize enough to know who made it, and don't see based on your preferences fine. It's the people that just FACEBOOK LOL it away that frustrate me (for not good reason really) a bit.

I love mezrich but the book wasn't very good and it's entire content could pretty much be summed up in one sentance (below). can't imagine the movie being very good, the story just isn't all that interesting.

Spoiler:
zuckerberg is a total fckface

I'm am not excited about this movie because it's going to make everyone think they know everything about the beginnings of Facebook when a good deal of the movie is actually fictionalized.

I did a semester's worth of detailed research on Facebook and the major players (everyone from Zuckerberg, Savarin, Parker, Thiel, to the newfolk like Owen Van Natta and Sheryl Sandberg) and the book this movie is based on seemed about 20% reality. And most of that reality was stuff a lot of people already knew like "he built it at Harvard" and "he dropped out of school" and "he got sued a bunch."

It'll be like saying you understand the rules of golf because you've seen Happy Gilmore.

Not sure I follow - what is there really to know? You mean the devil in the details stuff? I think the basic timeline from launch to now is pretty established and everyone is on the record about it. (If the movie really screws with this basic info, that's pretty weak - especially because alot of people already know these facts, especially anyone who reads tech press somewhat regularly.)

Also, regarding what might have actually went down - how would you know more vs. a guy who researched info for a book, considering no one (notably Zuckerberg) has ever spoken on the record about the more controversial elements?
