And of all people to know, my calendar is still in 2012.

Please feel free to mock the title all you want, I am impervious to your natterings!

Killa,

This is a slam dunk pass, imo.

This is why I think so. Enterprise consulting (especially ERP) is boring as ****. It is not about building great applications, it is about helping massive companies who move at the speed of the dinosaur integrate something over many months/years that should take highly competent people days/weeks. You will be a drone with massive amounts of paperwork as deliverables and almost no actual work will get done for massive amounts of time. You will be dealing with people who do not want to change their "business workflows" at all, and conforming the software application to the way they want to use it. Creative thinking and complex solutions will get punished because they are more expensive to implement and harder to maintain longterm, to steal a tired cliche, you will be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The clients you work with will be the droneiest of drones, completely useless, and make you hate yourself. If you think the guy who posted the Accord Sport vs. EX thread is an idiot, you will be thinking he is a genius after getting to know the clients you are sent to work with.

When you do well at this position, you will be rewarded. By being put on tougher client and project teams. You thought the last client was dumb, just wait for the next one. When you prove yourself capable of working with idiots and moving the process forward, you will be put on projects that are lagging, if you are really seen to be good, you will be put on a team with completely useless people. You will be doing 90% of the work, while you see 4-5 other people similar to you who are all billing the same. Or maybe they are billing more than you, maybe they are making a lot more than you, and they are completely useless. No matter, now you are basically the entire project's success or failure and you have 4-5 hangers on who the system integrator is able to bill with you.

Also, these projects can and will fail. They will fail spectacularly. If you are on a failed project, you have to get political very fast. If you don't play the game, you will be out of a job before you even realize what is going on. Layoffs also happen a lot, when the economy takes a downturn, these large projects are the first thing that gets cut. It is a huge reason why these companies are on archaic systems in the first place. They either never raised budget, or failed too many times at trying to implement the new latest and greatest ERP.

The only reason to do this is if you have a clear direction as to what you want to do after you are done with this. If you want to start your own consulting business, I couldn't think of a much better experience, but if you want to go back to working at big company X doing devops/infrastructure stuff, this isn't going to do much for you. Maybe you can get your way from this into a cushy management role if you play your cards right, but that is still a ways off.

killa,

I know I don't know much about all the work world stuff, but I do know a little about life. Work will be around and your daughter will be around, but your five year old daughter will only be around for a mere flash in time.

Larry's post is spot on. It's everything my wife complains about her job. I'm not going to show it to her, no way.

I just learned that the brother of a famous Dutch TV-host was an amazing NFL-player: Harald Hasselbach.

I never knew 'we' (The Dutch and my city of Amsterdam) had a Superbowl winner. Was he indeed the beast I imagine him to be?

Last edited by GMLAW; 09-01-2015 at 04:42 PM. Reason: Also kind of strange that this has never been mentioned in Dutch media AFAIK

He was a serviceable defensive lineman that fell into the role of a starter.

That's not to say he didn't earn his spot but he was far from a beast.

Hey wait, that's my title!

You should have read the original title that I came up with in my very snotty morning moments. "Don't these idiots know it's September? I expect the Euro's to have this thread made long before I wake up. Why do I have to do everything?"

But now, the onus is on Alobar! I expect a powerful, life changing, hilariously funny title change made within the hour!

Some candidates:
  • Red Eye (Wes Craven)
  • Passenger 57
  • Executive Decision
  • Airplane!
  • Air Force One
  • Flight Plan
  • Con Air
  • Snakes on a Plane
  • Non-Stop

To count, the majority of the story needs to take place on a plane so movies like Flight or Die Hard 2 don't count.

United 93 is excluded because it is the best movie on a plane.

Thanks LL , I know that ERP's suck I'm no dummy but is it one those "sucks but good" [EG I learn it and the skill pays off in spades] or is it sucks and really sucks more then I know. I think you gave that answer.

I just finished the last interview with the VP via skype, it went over with flying colors so I am for sure to be extended an offer. There are some key notes though :

1) travel is far less then the recruiters made it to be. He said, 50% tops probably less since everything is getting done in the cloud or remote. Most travel is glad handing.

2) From the recruiter: The pay isn't as high as first reported. They had me still living in NYC and thus had me at "NYC" rate, when they readjusted for Buffalo the pay dropped close to 20% , which to be fair is top of the market for an engineer in the area but its also close to what I expect when the Team at my current job forms

Basically it means if they don't offer the full enchilada on the salary front I'm going to decline and tell me lead ( or soon to be manager) that hey listen I'm starting to hear it out in the real world for my skills , lets get this team formed and salary bumps that we been promised all year so I can just flat out tell them no.

The other thing to remember is that this role is likely going straight to the client in terms of billing.

It probably isn't even the PWC "80% of your time must be billable" it's probably straight every hour to the client. This means when it comes to the $ they want to get you as low as reasonable. Trust that they aren't going to tell the end client that you are 20% less because your home base is buffalo. They get you interested at the top number and work you down from there as it gets closer to being real.

ERP systems universally suck. True enterprise (10k+ employees) companies use the worst software in the world.

Enterprise software is considered ripe for disruption and it's definitely starting to happen. Just look at what Coke is doing with Salesforce. It's just the tip of the iceberg and they are still only using SFDC for their sales org, HR and ERP systems are still so far behind.

Read into the issues companies are having with building public clouds (Alibaba) and you will feel good about what you are learning. It is still really really tough to do it well at scale. Amazon is in a league of their own, and have hired up a huge % of the talent currently available. What you are doing now will pay off big time, imo.

Some bastard has stolen the spare tyre from under my truck.

Super tilting.

The only good news is that I discovered now. Rather than part way through the road trips I have planned for my next two weekends.

I guess the security guards using mirrors to check my car for explosives every day do have a purpose after all...
