TY - just updated a score with me and Cavegirl, can send in a screenshot if necessary.

Also, just was checking scores and noticed Welshghirl had accidentally credited me five extra points. Have updated that too

PM me if there are any issues so we don't clutter the thread.
I don't think I have permission to PM in this forum.

I'm in. Thanks for setting it up.

Couple of ideas:

1) I see there's a reset button for each result. I haven't hit it because I don't want to erase any results, but do we want everyone to be able to do this? Maybe both users have to click on reset to have it done or only have admins or something have the permission to do it.

2) On the results page, how hard would it be to have the 'Player 1' column be the logged in users column? The page is just showing your own games so I think it be visually better if the logged in user is always on the left an the opponent is always on the right.

3) On the 'My Information' section, maybe include Ruzzle id too?

4) Could we add a player register page like the google docs sheet? And maybe make it searchable? It would be nice to see a page with all the users, sortable, with stats, and whatever personal details the player wants to share from their 'My Information' section.

I know it's early, but I figured I'd throw out ideas. Thanks for putting it together, it should make recording the seasons easier.

You can only reset your own games, it's an improvement to how it is now. I toyed with the idea of one player entering then the other confirming and it locking the game but i don't think it would work in practice. I'll add a trigger to store all deleted games in case issues arise.

Also don't worry about resetting scores or anything now because it will all be copied from the spreadsheet and locked down once the season is over anyway.

The idea is that the player on the left is the one that starts the game and mirrors how it is on the SWF results page. Which in theory should make it easier to keep track of who needs to start. If it doesn't work it's not hard to always put the logged in user first. I need to add some sort of "how to use this website" page but I was more worried about getting the functionality working

Been having some thoughts about the general structure of the league. I believe that in general it's a good idea not to have two players who are over 300 points apart in average skill, or at least not to have groups in which this is a commonly expected scenario. Now in group 1, with the elite of the elite, I think there's not much you can do but live with it. Also when the scores are so high (averages of 5000+), the difference in averages should mean a little less. If someone is like the 6th best in the world but not competitive with the 1st-3rd, then I'm sure they don't feel too bad about it.

The problem is in the 10th group. I believe the way the league is set up now, and looking at the overall spectrum of common scores amongst people who want to join the league, a 12 group format is more appropriate. I think the scores range from about 1800-5300+ or so. The main thing I want to avoid is a situation where someone averaging 2300 per game is in the same group as someone averaging 1700 per game. I don't mind these kinds of gaps with the elite players, but with new players just getting into the game, it can be a little intimidating.

Therefore I may do some weird experimenting with the bottom group, in order to try to make sure everyone can have as competitive an experience as possible. We've had problems retaining the last finishers in the bottom group for a few seasons now, mainly because they probably lose by just too much in so many of their games. It's a shame because I am sure they are still likely in the top 20% of all players worldwide, so I may break my structure rules slightly next season to see if there's not a way I can make that group as competitive as possible for everyone involved in it. Been thinking of adding an 11th group (and it'd probably only be 1 group of 8-9 players at most) that has slightly different rules regarding promotion/demotion as the rest of the league, and eventually expanding that to a 12th group.

Just curious on your thoughts....I feel bad for the person who has to play in Group 10 and face people who are relatively skilled like Jade, SuperJenium, Hero Prrzz, Ibetufold etc etc. It just doesn't feel right to me and it probably contributing to why we keep losing these guys, and as long as we keep losing these newer players it makes it more and more intimidating for everyone else out there.

I think a good approximate goal would be:

1 - 5000 (right now the best are just too good hence the giant gap between 1+2)
2 - 4300
3 - 4000
4 - 3800
5 - 3500
6 - 3300
7 - 3000
8 - 2800
9 - 2600
10 - 2300
11 - 2000
12 - 1800

(with the idea that the numbers above will probably rise a bit with time due to the overall skill increase of everyone in the SWF universe)

That is all! I think that people averaging like 1500 or less probably won't be wanting to get in the league anyway, or they'll just improve their game a bit and then join.

1. Well with the spreadsheet people can erase and change anything they want. I don't see how this will be any different Also I don't think people are joining a SWF league so they can make up scores. For the most part when someone does that they will probably be correct, and likely someone will send me a screenshot of the game to clear things up anyway.

2. I'd be fine with this too. I think the main reason, as Jason has said, is to make sure that people go first once and last once. It'll also be interesting to get that information because once and for all we can see in clear terms how big of or whether it's an advantage. I'm pretty sure it's a very significant one.

3. This league has absolutely nothing to do with Ruzzle, so I'm not sure I want to put that there, especially if at some point there is a small chance of being connected to Zynga (multiple people have suggested it to me, although not sure how realistic it is)...they definitely won't want us advertising their competitors.

4. I'm sure this will happen at some point

Ok I will continue this convo will myself Basically going to keep it at 10 groups because it seems much more aesthetic, but will be maybe keep Group 10 slightly smaller than the other groups if it seems appropriate.

I'd set your baseline score at 2000 curtains. it's a good place to start and go up from there. Probably would keep it at a 10 group league as well.

eliminates many 1-season players that come in and get washed out because they didn't win anything. I know for me I am challenging higher ranked players to get better and hope to get out of the basement at some point.

just my 0.02c and am excited for next season.

sorry i meant to respond - definitely think it would be nice to have more lower levels, but if the talent disparities are too great it's easy to see why people would give up on the league

Either way would likely work. Disparities are a concern especially with new players however it is also likely that players at that level are going to be improving at a rapid rate. Those that do will become competitive in group 10 and move up in time. Others may not have a strong interest in the first place and move on. Whatever method you use to keep the bottom group close in terms of average score should work to keep new players interested.

Hi kittea, all useful stuff like that will be added eventually. It's brand new for now. Most likely for now you can find that info on the spreadsheet until we move it over.

It is, note however that 4 of the guys in group 2B beat me in the tryout games. 3 of them were very very close, one of them seems to be just much better than me.

In case you were wondering how I divvy up the groups, I take the top 2 seeds, (10+11) put one each in Group 2A+2B, then take 12+13, and use an RNG to determine which group they are in, and I do this over and over to determine the final groupings.

It's a much weaker extension of Group 1 Btw note that in order to get to Group 1, one will have to win their Group 2 group.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the 10th season of the World Championship of Scramble! This season begins immediately and ends at midnight ET on December 18th. It's ending a little earlier than usual to fit in with my travel schedule. Quite a few players were removed from the league due to not recording enough games in Season 9 and or/not responding to emails about these games. If you would like to rejoin for a future season you will have to let me know.

Before I get started, please note that we have a brand new website that is going to be used as an alternate method of entering scores for this season while we test it out, and shortly thereafter will be the only way to enter scores. You should join this site immediately and as of tomorrow night sometime you should start entering your scores there instead of on the spreadsheet.

You can access it here: http://swfleague.host56.com/

For now everyone's username and password is their SWF name (case sensitive with spaces) and you will be prompted to change it as soon as you log in or click "Forgot my Password" and enter your SWF name and your e-mail address (the one that you supplied to me before joining the league). Please email me if you have any questions and please login there as soon as possible so you'll all be ready to use it for the next season. Until our web designer updates the site to reflect the 10th season, it won't be usable, but it likely will be sometime tomorrow afternoon. Until then you'll have to use our spreadsheet which is listed below. Please take any questions to our facebook page, as I know it can be confusing for a new player.

Congratulations to last year's Group 1 winners:

Gold Medal winner: LyndseyBrowning

Silver Medal: Word_Wizz

Bronze Medal: FlamingFox88

Congrats to the other winners who are listed on our website and who are announced on our Facebook page as they are decided.

A few quick reminders on the rules:

1. You get two power ups per round
2. You get 1 point for each round you win, 2 points for winning the match, for a total of 5 points up for grabs in each match. So if you win 2 rounds out of 3 and win the match, you'd get 4 points and your opponent would get 1 point.
3. You play everyone in your group twice, and alternate going first each time. So the first time you challenge them, and as soon as that game ends, they should hit the "play again" button. I would also recommend that at your earliest convenience you go through the entire list of players in your group, and challenge them all one by one. It is okay if you have more than one simultaneous game against the same opponent, and this will help ensure the games are completed on time.
4. Say "league" in the chat window before starting each game
5. As mentioned earlier, we have a new website and that is where everyone should get used to entering their scores, however until it's set up to handle this season you can still enter your scores on the spreadsheet as usual. Here is the result entries page: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...amVST3c#gid=83
6. If you don't know how to enter your results please write something on our facebook page asking for advice, or read our rules: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...xok1R3sKrI/edi
7. There will be a one game championship game played between the two winners of each group. (ie Group 2A+Group 2B)
8. There is also some discussion on the league on the twoplustwo forums. Check it out here: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/34...l#post36026518

btw since you guys are all poker players, and maybe protective of your accounts and stuff, I would recommend not using a serious password for the scramble league website as I will be able to see everyone's password, and I will definitely be trying to steal all of your money.

fyi, this is very bad design from a security point of view. You should never store passwords in plain text. Best practice is to use a strong hash function with a unique salt, and you should at a minimum hash the password.

Most people use the same password for most of their accounts (even tough they know they should not). If somebody hacks the database they now gain access to the e-mail address and password of all your users. And to make it worse you just incentivised potential hackers by broadcasting your password policy, and telling them there is a lot of money to be made from careless poker players.

Please fix this, it should be easy. In the meantime you should display a warning when users register an account or change their password.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, it seems that everyone here pretty much plays better with the sound on... I literally can't even remember what it sounds like since I NEVER play with the sound on.. maybe I should try it
