Couldn't imagine driving 2 hours for a game. Gas? $20 each way?

Yeah, about that. Depends on your car ldo

So no one has further thoughts on the $200/mo couch deal after I relayed all this info?

Do what you gotta do, man. I'd definitely be getting a lot of my money back if I were you, and I'd tell the landlady that I'd be paying on a month to month basis. Sounds like she wants you to stay there as badly as you want to. Two hundred isn't a terrible deal, but I'm sure you could do better if you looked around. If you're happy with the current situation, go for it. But letting her keep all that money isn't wise. If you go today, tell her you're gonna let her keep the $200 for the month, just to try the situation out. I doubt I'd let her take that large of a deposit, either, if I'd even give her one at all.

If you're staying there 8-12 days out of the month it's fine. Don't be surprised if you end up with 3-4 people renting the floor by the end of the month tho.

Well, I just hope you look back on your time on the couch as the best years of your life, if that helps.

For the record, I haven't "discovered" anything. I'm just going off of advice from other SoCal 2p2 LLSNL poker players. The general consensus is that LA is bad for LLSNL. I'm moving out there for the weekends to find out whether or not it really is that profitable.

So you think you gain significantly more than $400 a month (or whatever the gas + lol coach is) a month in EV from Palm Springs? Note that it would have to be significantly more than that to make it worth the hassle. I find that hard to believe.

Also, I'm pretty sure OP ends up broke within 3 months of this little adventure.

So you already gave this lady $620 to sleep on a couch so that you can play in a game with only 10 buyins that you don't even know is profitable yet? Sounds like quite a plan.

No way! There must be a huge supply of flush couch-sleepers in the area.

Driving round trip in one day isn't an option (driving for 2 hours after a fatiguing poker session is suicide), and I plan on going there regularly anyway.

The expenses issue is a big one. Like dale says, the time / energy / hassle / money all combined probably makes this a -EV propostion. You're basically gonna have to profit three buy-ins more per month to make it worthwhile. It's possible but not likely. Now if you're doing this little venture as an experiment to see if you want to give it a go full time in Palm Springs, have at it. Or maybe there's some other incentive you're not letting us in on (a hot piece of ass, or you like the adventure, for instance). From a strictly monetary standpoint you're likely losing out overall. But you didn't come here for the answer to that question, right?

I think I have already said everything worth mentioning lol.

1. For SoCal grinders, Palm Springs is where it's at according to other 2p2'ers
2. I saw a room available on Craigslist for the price of 4 nights at the cheapest motel in the area...as MONTHLY rent
3. The variance of playing with 10 BIs is similar to the variance of playing LLSNL in LA
4. One time plzzzz

My current WR over a small sample (30 hours) is $50/hr. Let's say my true WR is $25/hr

3 BI's = $600

$600 / $25 = 24 hours of grinding / mo

24 hours per mo / 8 sessions per mo = 3 hours / session

And now this thread will officially diverge into the discussion of "lol 12.5bb/hr = 50bb/100 = not possible"

10 bi is pretty aggro, 20 is prob. fine.

If you do go broke just keep sleeping on the couch throughout the day out of spite.

i dont play live poker a lot but i dont see how you pay for THREE MONTHS on this COUCH when you're testing a new game on an admittedly short bankroll. come on bro

It was 3 months or nothing is why. She wouldn't let me do month to month initially.

1. I sign a 3 month contract for $320/mo, I pay a $300 deposit and $320 for first month in a private room

2. (tentative) She wants a new tenant to take my room (nothing signed yet) since he is willing to stay longer than 3 months for sure (while I have to wait and see). Suggests I take the couch for $200 per month. She keeps $600 and pays me back $20

#2 is tentative and why I made this thread. I might do the following:

A) Only agree to signing the couch deal if I start month to month for $200 immediately

or

B) She gets the first 3 months of rent for $150/mo

Keeping the room for $320/mo is also an option for me since we are still under a contract

But sleeping on a couch is going to have you ready to go. A motel six room is $56 a night. If you stay two nights each weekend you are paying $280 a month more than sleeping on someone's couch. If you don't see the value in that $280, well good luck to you.

I understand you don't have much money and are trying something but why not build up a bigger bankroll where you are until you can afford to do it right. Otherwise you are likely going to fail without having given yourself the best chance to succeed.

You are too caught up in this "deal" you got for a full month over a handful of motel room stays. Yet under no scenario do you plan to use it all month so that is not relevant and does not make it a good deal. Also with the motel if you can't go one weekend you pay nothing.

Again I realize your money situation is tight, but it seems too tight for what you are trying to do.

Go ask all the people who told you Palm Springs is the place to be with only two to three hundred dollars a month for lodging. Maybe one of them has a spare room. Maybe someone else wants to do the same thing and you split the motel costs.

I am normally super cheap but in my businesses I know when I need to spend money to make money, even if a short term less expensive option is available.

The original deal is not horrible for the room but I just assume there is no chance she lets you take the room even with the contract. Call it a hunch.

So now is the time to look at what to do next. I know I even mentioned getting the couch for cheap, but thinking about it, even free is not worth it. You literally would be better off just sleeping in your car.

There's a reason your situation sucks, and there's a pretty obvious solution. If you're just going to be obstinate about it nobody's going to want to help you. You're on a poker forum with 1000s of other people in a situation similar to yours, take advantage of that and listen FFS.

Unfortunately it is too common that people ask for advice on something silly and refuse to even discuss the bigger and more substantial issues that cause their problem to exist in the first place.

He really just wants someone to validate paying $200 a month to sleep on a couch 8-10 nights a week is a good deal, regardless as to why one might do that.

At least it's warm in the house, unlike my car.

Playing low stakes in LA isn't an option.

Why is it bad for me to give it a shot for the first month to see how it goes?

Edit:

No, I'm trying to find a better monthly $ than $200/mo since everyone seems to agree that it's outrageous.

I don't understand how someone can recommend sleeping in my car over $200/mo on a couch. People say this is a bad deal but have yet to offer real alternatives. If I don't take the room OR the couch now, I will miss an opportunity to save a ton of lodging money on a weekly basis.

Tens, I may have missed this, but have you looked again on Craigslist to see if you can get another room at the original price you got? Or is this such a good deal for you that you're willing to sleep on the couch for the price difference?

OP,

"I'll take the couch for $150, or I'll just keep the room for $320, thx."

She'll budge. There's not a ton of demand for random couches.
