you've probably heard a lot of these but i'll at least try and list stuff that hasn't gotten much love itt

joe budden mood muzik 2 & 3
wu tang & solo acts - 8 diagrams, liquid swords, ob4cl, 36 chambers etc u probably know all these
M.O.P - firing squad & warriorz
Joell Oritz - the brick bodega chronicles
Big Pun - all three records
Capone N Noreaga - the war report
the L.O.X/D-Block - money, power, respect
Big L (wtf i hope i'm not the first to mention this)
lupe fiasco - the cool, food & liquor
jedi mind tricks/army of pharaohs/outerspace - might not be your kind of thing, some people don't like the violent, battle rap stuff. if u check out just one of these acts get "violent by design" by jedi mind tricks, amazing record.
cunninlynguists - will rap for food, a piece of strange

hmm i could probably go on for a while but i'm tired so off to bed

disclaimer: I'm white and english

I love Immortal Technique, Deltron 3030 is one of the best concept albums of all time; Handsome Boy Modeling School is awesome and Let's Get Free by Dead Prez is excellent but i bet they'd hate a cracker giving it love.

Saw Atmosphere in 2001 in UK and again in NYC in 2002, I like them and they're pretty funny, but they (he) are (is) not the greatest artist(s) [do you count Cres Moon as well as Slug?] in the world. Fun tho.

I like some of Antipop Consortium's stuff, but not other bits. they had Pharoah Monche guest on a record and that was pretty goot.

Kool Keith is good, but vitriolic. He played in UK 2003; at the same festival as Public Enemy, who were polished but lacked the fire of their earlier albums, uh oh am i veering into rap? I dunno.

not really listened to Dizz(ee?) Rascal, but "A Grand Don't Come For Free" by The Streets is another excellent concept album.

Imo the Streets and Atmosphere are kind of similar in their "fun"/"funny" style about different topics. Kind of scatty though and in no way politically informed like other, better, artists.

Oh, hey also "Mr. Raven" by MC Lars. hahahahha Poe in hiphop form, gold. Kind of like Dead Prez's Orwell one.

Breaking Atoms by The Main Source
Critical Beatdown by Ultramagnetic MCs
Step into the Arena by GangStarr
Revolutionary but Gangster by Dead Prez
Wanted: Dead or Alive by Kool G Rap and DJ Polo
BlackStar by Mos Def and Talib Kweli
Train of Thought by Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek

disclaimer: I'm white, but not English.

I like Dizzee Rascal a lot, but it took me forever to "get" him. His production style can result (intentionally) in some harsh, ugly sounds, especially on his first album. Also, the guy's accent is super thick - I had no problem understanding The Streets, but DR was much more difficult.

I'd recommend this song for any new listeners: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN_8GJSdVJ8

It took 82 posts for Cunninlynguists to only get a passing mention?! How is this possible? They are absolutely awesome and A Piece of Strange was by far the best album of 2006.

A few artists in this thread Ive never understood the love for, if someone wants to lemme know what Im missing, please do so.

Too Short
Cormega
Mobb Deep (seriously, they had one good album and it wasnt even that great even tho it gets ridiculous love)
IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE - he seriously annoys the hell out of me. Like a rapper who tries to rap with deep thought but often completely butchers his point (which is often flawed anyway) and seems to just search for places to use long or obscure words just to sound "deep"

Gotta agree that the almost all of the rawkus collection is gold. I always avoided Jay-Z for some reason (childish hate) but now Ive been listening to all his albums I realise what Ive been missing. Wu Tang albums are great in spots (36 chambers, Forever, Tical, 4:21, OB4CL, pretty much all of Ghostface and GZA's solo albums and even Masta Killa). Also OP, please god pick up Gangstar stuff considering you're tastes.

I like what Ive heard of Brother Ali and Murs, gonna have to listen to more of them.

Too Short's old stuff is awesome. Not because it is lyrical genius, not because it is in depth, but just because it is fun to listen to. Anything after album #10 is hit or miss.

Cormega is kinda weak to me too.

I agree about Mobb Deep. They have had a few nice tracks since The Infamous, but the albums have been lacking.

IT is dope if you listen to the right tracks. Some tracks he just rambles, but his story tracks are insanely dope. Try Dance with the Devil and You Never Know.

Ok, Ill check out Too Short's older stuff then. Ill probably check out those Immortal Technique tracks as well, but only to understand why people like him, I doubt theyll get me over my hate for him.

EDIT: Forgot to add one that hasnt been mentioned. Geto Boys & Scarface solo as well. Probably close to one of the most forgotten great talents there is in Hip Hop.

the greatest/most skilled rapper of all time:
tech n9ne

the coolest/most laid back rapper of all time:
devin the dude

those two I hear for poker,
the first when I'm aggro and running well
the latter when I need to calm down/ regain my confidence.

the most underrated rapper:
mikah 9 / myka nyne

Good taste. Techa Nina is my favorite. Devin is like a modern day Too Short (if Short had retired 10 years ago)

Scarface is incredible as well. This newest album of his is short, but nice all the way through.
