Officer. The title is Officer, not officer. For example: the president of the United States. That looks bad.

Officer White is just and ordinary police officer.
I am under the impression that anything that becomes a proper name becomes capitalized.

Officer Jackson.

But you would not capitalize in this setting: Tim Jackson, an officer of the law in San Diego.

I am not a native English speaker so correct me if I am wrong : Officer and principal can be considered titles. I don't think teacher falls into the same category.

That is probably correct. It's sort of a moot point as nobody says "Teacher Jameson" afaik

The highest rank in the army is general. General Patton commanded the 3rd Army.

Yeah that was not artfully phrased. The commander of the 3rd Army was General Patton.

I laugh because I did the same thing earlier when I typed my example for post #1252 before changing it.

My head would explode if I read the whole thread, but one that has popped up a lot in BQ lately is "loose" instead of "lose", as in, "I hate loosing a pot to fish."

That's been a very common one on the internet for years. The worst example I saw was when someone said it was a "loose/loose situation".

Although Patton was not Commander-in-chief, right?

GODDAMIT CONAN!!!

I used to think Conan O'Brien wrote all his own tweets, but now I'm wondering if he has a writer or an assistant do it. I refuse to believe Conan himself would totally f*cktard himself with apostrophes the way he did in this tweet:

Quote:
11 years between “Toy Story’s” and 7 months between “Twilight’s.” By that measure, the “Jonah Hex” sequel should be out in 3 days.
Really funny comment, btw, but ruined by the raping of punctuation.

How should it be written?

"11 years between Toy Storys and seven months between Twilights. By that measure, the Jonah Hex sequel should be out in three days."

even though an apostrophe is grammatically incorrect there, it's a difficult thought to squeeze into a tweet and the apostrophe makes it a little more obvious what he's talking about

complaining about poor grammar on twitter; this thread has reached a new low.

Is the dratted semi-colon apropos? The first part of that sentence can't stand alone.

No, it really isn't.

Not at all. Why? If he said "between Toy Story and Twilight films" we'd be confused?

I think that's an acceptable Twitter sentence, you're implying a "There were."

The issue with the apostrophes is that they are just wrong.

I meant Triumph's semi. I was always under the impression that a semi-colon can be used when 2 sentences can barely stand alone, and aren't correlated strongly enough to be linked together with a paltry comma.

I can't possibly be a bigger nerd; I enjoy discussing the semi-colon way too much.

Also, this is from a comedy panel show here in the UK called QI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht2ZAxMqlIk

I had always thought "none of them work" sounded fine.

This is not, strictly speaking, a grammar issue. But I was listening to the PokerRoad Radio podcast earlier and Joe Sebok makes a big deal out of agreeing with someone "five thousand per cent". He repeats it at least 2 times, stressing the five thousand to show how serious he is.

First of all, 100% is the max...anything above that is meaningless. Later in the same podcast, Joe says he agrees with someone "a hundred per cent". Again, he stresses this to show that he completely agrees. I'm thinking, "Wow, that's 1/50th of the level of agreement you had earlier."

This is used everywhere. I remember Randy Jackson often using "a thousand million per cent" on that silly Idol show.
