Well, bear in mind I'm a peasant, and within the UK there are lots of regional variations, but we (from my neck o the woods) are a bit reluctant to use ride for anything except horses (or what you did to the skank you took home the night before).

We might cut about on a bike, or just go it. We'd rather not use ride for that.

The thing is, I come from the class in which Scots is native, which means using your 'best English' is saved for the most formal situations. Most of my fellow peasant class don't realise that they naturally operate at various points of a continuum between Scots and Scots English (and that their English is not actually a bastardised version - it's a different language), depending on how formal the situation is, and your familiarity with the interlocutor.

So, riding a bike might be seen as 'speaking properly', and so some kind of admittance of homosexual tendencies, which is the last thing a young Scot needs to admit to his barbaric friends.

Riding the bus, underground, or whatever is a big no no. We just get it.

I once did an hour lesson entirely on the word '****'.

I'd never seen them so happy before.

Give it a go.

And of course, 'affect' can also be a noun (although pronounced differently).

Yeah, fair enough, but how many times do you see effect used correctly as a verb?

The people that's directed at would no doubt have no idea how to use it as a verb.

Fair dos though, we are being nitty, after all; but the pic is correct.
