LOL @ people disliking "seafood." That is so ridiculous. There are so many different kinds of seafood that someone who says that I immediately judge as having never been 50 miles from their hometown or gone to a decent restaurant.

lol, I've done this before, though I felt it was justified.

I really don't like cheese...sometimes. Like, I like certain cheese, idk which ones, at certain times.

But, I don't like cheese on my burritos. Ever. So I'm at this burrito place, I say no cheese, like I always do, and the guy starts sprinkling cheese on it. I go "no no, NO cheese". He calls over the jeffe (boss in espanol imo) and the guy says "whats wrong" and I go "I said no cheese" and he goes "hmm.... ...." I stand there looking at him ".... ...are you allergic to cheese?" Me ".....................................yeah, I'm lactose intolerant" but really I was thinking "WTF IS THE DIFFERENCE"

Obv they made me a new one. Delicious, as always.

Only weird things I do are not eat eggs, mushrooms, and I don't eat raw apples. I think the apple one is the weirdest, love apple pie, but something about the texture and taste of uncooked apples is just bland and unappetizing to me. People who completely rule out things like all seafood or vegetables are nuts though.

i hate this "tomato is a fruit" ****. i mean, i guess it is, but we all know it's a "vegetable".. just like a bell pepper is, even though a bell pepper is technically a fruit too. to avoid such ambiguity i think we should just keep calling the tomato a vegetable.

They put a ton of butter in everything to cover up their bland uncreative crap. When I look over a restaurant menu, I think to myself "among the non-red meat dishes, which one will have the least butter?" I'll eat eggs, but I hate cooking them cuz they smell so bad.
lol. Lol. lawl. okay. so are you going to a chef who use butter in his dishes or to a chef where butter is the dish?

you're like stealthmunk only with food instead of women.

This is true. I used to hate raw tomatoes until I had a slice of an heirloom at a good restaurant. Changed my outlook completely. The same is true of a lot of produce, though. Once you've had it from a farmer's market, it's pretty tough going back to the flavorless, mealy crap they sell at grocery stores.

Someone mentioned this above, but if you're ruling out whole categories of food (e.g. "vegetables") that's just a mental block imo.

However, iirc there has been some research done showing that genetics play a large role in food preferences. I think it was in the NYT can't remember. Anyway, yeah, so there's that too -- some people are predisposed to dislike certain foods.

A lot of midwesterners are like this. But in their defense, the fish they sell at supermarkets there is pretty foul. I'd probably think I hated all fish too if I only was exposed to rancid tilapia fillets.

I don't think this is the reason though. Most people will like most foods if they eat them enough times and let their pallettes adapt. Most bitter foods/drinks like beer/tea/etc. take a while to get used to for example.

I read somewhere that food preferences are almost 100% learned/conditioned. It's battle of the vaguely-remembered academic articles!

In their defense? Maybe that defense would fly in 1950, but not anymore. We have refrigerated trucks that get fresh fish to markets almost every day. As long as you smell it and check it out before you buy, you shouldn't have any trouble getting fresh fish anywhere in the country.

If the food tastes like feces to you, it's not really much different from being allergic. In fact, as someone who finds a large number of foods to taste disgusting and is also allergic to a few things, I would much rather eat the things I'm allergic to and deal with the allergic reactions. Of course my allergies are relatively minor, but still.

People get used to torture if they have to go through it every day too.

Why? Unless you're into cannibalism, we all have an arbitrary moral line on what we'll eat.

If you think that Safeways or whatever in Bumblefart, Illinois are getting fresh fish deliveries every day, you're, well, dead wrong. The fish you get at your average grocery store was frozen, thawed, and has been sitting out in display for well over a week.
