sorry to hear about how you guys had to deal with that stuff
went to get a puppy and gf was so enamored with two of them and i apparently had no veto power so we ended up with both
they really loved hanging out together and were always playing
the golden died within a month from distemper and the lab survived but we found a farmer who wanted him when we had to leave the country and it was pretty heartbreaking giving him up but we weren't sure how long we'd be gone and ended up being close to two years so glad we did that as opposed to kennel life for 2 years
when we came back my gf took home a stray kitten one day
he was the oddest cat ever, he liked water and we had to keep the toilet seats closed otherwise he'd jump in and play, he'd follow me into the shower and i kept the doors closed would scratch at them relentlessly
he also fetched, which wasn't something i taught him but rather i'd be trying to work and he'd be playing with a toy mouse of his by my side and it would be distracting so i'd throw the mouse so he'd chase after it and then play with it over there and one day he realized if he came back and literally dropped the mouse on my hand then i would throw it again and he would repeat that
i wanted to take him back with me so badly but i couldn't fly with pets during covid (cats can get covid) and my 6 flight/48 hour covid return to the USA would have been terrible for a cat even if i could have brought him
and of course my ex in her declining mental state starts viewing him as a reminder of us and so brought him back to our old neighborhood and released him and then left - something i've never forgiven her for doing - stray cats in china are very much semi-domesticated as a lot of old ladies will pseudo adopt them by leaving food out every day and having their cat routine but just not bring them home so I'm optimistic he did well and likely given how friendly he was found a new home for adoption soon - he did love going outdoors though, always tried to go out so when we moved to a 1st floor apartment we would just let him go out and he'd sometimes be gone for days at a time so he clearly had a knack for it so I'm sure he survived and still alive even if he didn't get adopted again - but i still will never forgive what she did - worst part is 2 years later she's still messaging me trying to get back together - no, you are the crazy person who abandoned our cat
also my sister had to leave the country for work, when she took the job the vet said her dog had less than 3 months to live and she wouldn't be leaving the country for another year so I ended up taking care of the dog and have had her for a few months now
well the dog is still alive, she's not in pain or anything and but she barely eats and lost so much weight she's just skin and bones, in september it looked like she was at the very end, wouldn't eat anything, didn't want to go for walks, etc but lately she's been rebounding and eating again (won't eat dog food nor dog treats so what little she will eat is human food but after having something for a while she'll suddenly stop eating it so it's just a constant struggle to find new things - like she'll love fish sticks and eat a ton of those and then suddenly one day refuses to eat fish sticks so it's been a constant rotation of rotisserie chicken, tuna, cold cuts, liver, hot dogs, kielbasa, bread, goldfish crackers, banana bread, etc
she's been super interested in seafood so whenever i have clams, lobster, crab, oysters she always eats it as well, just so absurd opening an oyster and feeding it to her but alas before i found creative ways to get her food she'd often go like 2-3 days refusing to eat anything
she's since gained back a few pounds from her lowest weight but she's still about 30 pounds heavier than weight last year before the diagnoses
side effect of kidney disease is she can't process water efficiently so she drinks constantly because it just runs through her like a pipe rather than getting absorbed and what's keeping her alive are a bunch of medicine i need to put in a gob of peanut butter and force open her mouth and stick to the roof of her mouth and then kind of muzzle her a little so she has enough room to chew but not spit it out - she's since accepted that she can't spit the peanut butter and will just take it now without much resistance - she also needs an intravenous iv every few days where you're just injecting fluids directly into her because it's the only way to overcome the fact that the kidney can't process it
but she's doing far better now than just 3-4 months ago so who knows how long she'll make - we have an at home euthanasia person already setup though and are going to avoid taking to the vet
here's a pic i took for my sister about a month ago
