Parking Ticket, What's my play? Parking Ticket, What's my play?

Here's a little bit of background on the area I am in.

I go to a university and there is two municipal parking zones in the area that people switch through so they can stay legally parked for a whole day (3 hour maximum).

Zone 1 and 2 are divided by a huge yellow section (no parking).

Zone 1 borders another municipality.

I was notified about the zoning when I got accepted to this university and have always parked appropriately. (9AM to 11:25AM in zone 1 and 11:30AM to 1:40PM in zone 2)

I noticed a spot at the border of zone 2 where I could legally park (right before the yellow) and put my car there. As always, I come back to move the car at 11:30 and put it into zone 1.

I return to my car at around 2PM to find that I've been ticketed for overparking.

Along with this, I got some information from the municipality and our province's insurance corporation.

- If I have an outstanding ticket, my car is eligible to get towed in that municipality
- Renewing your car insurance or license is independent of municipal or private parking violations (they only care about provincial violations)
- There is no photographic evidence of my car being in that area for longer than the amount of time (if there was, this would easily have been solved)
- When you renew your insurance, you can get a new plate number at no additional charge (which is in 2 weeks)

Also, I have a friend who lives a block down the street and he's okay with me parking there.

I've also looked at a site with this information on it:
Quote:
In the City of Toronto (it could be any city) a company, Municipal Parking Corporation, operates in Toronto. The tickets that they generate are not legally enforceable, given that they are not generated on behalf the Municipality of Toronto, in accordance with the Provincial Offences Act.
So because they are not legally enforceable, this means that I will never ever have to worry about spending a night in jail or any bull**** along those lines.

I've also been told that I will likely be getting sent letters from this municipality telling me to cough up the money. I have no problem with this because I have no problem dropping this off in my mailbox under "to return."

Also, there is no dispute option on the ticket with additional information which really worries me because it makes it possible that the municipality is knowingly issuing tickets to non-offenders and are simply seeking revenue.

Given that, what should I do?

That isn't even an option considering that there is no repercussion to not paying.

It's whether or not I should bother disputing it.

If I get hassled by this municipality, I'll just post the number on my caller ID to 4chan.

$35 which goes up to $50 if not paid in 7 days.

I should also note that it's not the amount that matters. It's the fact that this municipality isn't doing it's job correctly (all other municipalities provide photographic proof that your car was illegally parked) and I wasn't even doing anything wrong.

You are not very bright. Please tell me you are at Erindale or Scarbrough campus and not UofT proper.

That post was way too long.

These tickets have nothing to do with the city of Toronto. They call themselves Municipal Parking to cause confusion. The information they provided while all truthful statements apply to real tickets not to these fake tickets -- again the hope is to cause confusion.

That being said many universities in Ontario have deals with their city that allow the university to enforce parking tickets but those are usually issued by campus police not scammy fake meter-maids.

Sounds like you overparked.

1. Pay your deserved ticket; or
2. Refuse, wait for the company to sell the debt to a collections agency, and spend the next two years answering their calls six times a day. Not paying will suck more, no matter how right you are.

They aren't going to sell it to a collection agency, they aren't out any money. Ignore it.

It is not a legal fine. It has as much authority as me issuing people tickets.

Actually as of a year or two ago they did. There was actually a big deal about why it was legal for them to sell non-debts to collection agencies. There was an attempt to stop that but i don't believe it happened. He'll start getting calls very aggressively. Canada is a weird place.

i don't know how it works in communist countries but in the us they'd probably send you to collections and **** up your credit rating. which doesn't seem like a big deal when you're a badass 19 year old sticking it to the man but might become a pain in the ass in the future.

Actually re-reading the OP I now realize he goes to York which explains a lot -- I knew OP couldn't be at UofT. While the fine is still not legal York contracts their parking enforcement to these guys so he might find his records sealed and unable to register next year or graduate.

I say you be a rebel and fight the system. Don't pay it then proceed to protest it. Bring your struggle all the way to the capital if need be but whatever you do don't be a sucker and pay it.
