I've just seen The Darkest Hour.

Terrible, terrible film. A true 1/5 for me, which is unusual because I'm normally very generous with fun and vacant genre pieces.

This was just SOOOOO disgustingly bad though. It seemed like a collection of zombie apocalypse film stereotypes (which is fair enough in itself) but that seemed like ALL it was. The acting was really poor, the character actions made no sense, stuff kept happening for the sake of it happening rather than extending the story in the "world". I really hated it. Dialogue was ******ed too. Characters just cut-out stereotypes.

To anyone reading this. DON'T watch it, even if you're in a lazy exciting movie mood as this film will not deliver imo.

I also saw Margin Call today. I generally liked it. An interesting study of one day of choices in a single office floor just before the big 2008 financial crisis. I liked it because it didn't try to be sensational, score melodramatic points for the sake of them but just study the happenings in the organisation. Probable 3.5/5.

Recently seen:

Boy Wonder: A young Brooklyn boy witnesses the brutal murder of his mother and grows up obsessed with finding her killer. Thus begins his life as a quiet, straight-A student by day and a self-appointed hero at night. Pretty decent.

Moneyball: Thought it was very good especially if you're a baseball fan.

Killer Elite: Not bad. Star power with Statham, Clive Owen & Deniro. Worth watching.

Another I've not seen recommended but I have at 9/10 stars:

Sin Nombre (2009): Movie about a teen that gets caught up as a member of a violent Mexican street gang and hides his involvement from the girl he loves. Really good movie.

A Very Long Engagement

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_very_long_engagement
Quote:
Five soldiers are convicted of self-mutilation in order to escape military service during World War I. They are condemned to face near certain death in the no man's land between the French and German trench lines. It appears that all of them were killed in a subsequent battle, but Mathilde, the fiancée of one of the soldiers, refuses to give up hope and begins to uncover clues as to what actually took place on the battlefield. She is all the while driven by the constant reminder of what her fiancé had carved into one of the bells of the church near their home, MMM for Manech Aime Mathilde (Manech Loves Mathilde; a pun on the French word aime, which is pronounced like the letter "M". In the English-language version, this is changed to "Manech's Marrying Mathilde").

Along the way, she discovers the brutally corrupt system used by the French government to deal with those who tried to escape the front. She also discovers the stories of the other men who were sentenced to the no man's land as a punishment. She, with the help of a private investigator, attempts to find out what happened to her fiancé. The story is told both from the point of view of the fiancée in Paris and the French countryside—mostly Brittany—of the 1920s, and in flashback to the battlefield.
Just finished watching this and thought i would mention it here. I don't watch many movies in general and subtitles are usually enough to lose me, but this movie kept me interested from start to finish*. I had a hard time writing my own description of the plot so hopefully nobody minds if i copy/paste.

*It also helps when the main character is adorable.

The Grey - a bit long but enjoyable, maybe in part because I've been to Alaska in the winter before out in the middle of ****ing no where.

Not all that believable obv, but it had a good ending IMO. Though the little bit at the end of the credits was awful and almost ruined the movie for me.

Man on a Ledge - 3/10 - Not exactly why this movie was made. Truly terrible implausible plot, boring and predictable the entire way. The spanish chick in it is hot though, bumped it from a 2/10 for me.

The Grey - 9/10. I probably overrate this movie since its theme really spoke to my personality. Its a classic man vs nature movie, with some existential themes sprinkled throughout. It draws on a bit, but personally I feel the pacing was appropriate for the deeper messages that they were trying to convey. Good philosophical debate fodder for afterwards.

watched a few movies in the past few weeks

the descendants-7/10-agree that its a white peoples problems movie , still thought it was above average ...clooney was great , daughter was good too .

moneyball-7.5/10---expected it to be pretty bad but was pleasantly surprised , thought pitt was good as billy beane , really enjoyed the behind the scenes baseball stuff but other than that theres not much substance , still worth a watch ...

take shelter- 8.5/10--p[etty good psychological thriller..scarier than most horror movies without the gore/cgi , just the sense of impending doom made me feel squeamish and uncomfortable , michael shannon (van alden from BE) and jessica chastain were both real good in this .

Just watched The Grey.

Probably give it a 6/10. I don't watch many movies but game this one a go. I found it was good but there really wasn't much too it. I found it was predictable and also wasn't sure what the deal with the wolves was. Didn't know if they were meant to be supernatural or just regular wolves. Good movie overall though, and my 6 may seem low, but I did like the movie.
