So Custer, LoL, myself, etc defend against attackers (no need to quote) which in turn gets responded to by attackers and on and on we go.

In these scenarios, it's those being attacked who are to blame for defending themselves because, IYO, it's their responsibility that the conversation continues.

That seems victim-blamey to me. At the very least you should be pissed at the situation in general or, if anything, at those who continue to direct rude or critical commentary at me/us, not at those willing to defend.
