My 10 yr old son has been playing Toon Town then moved to Wizard 101 and Roblox over the last year. He asked for WOW, which I've said no too. But is there something in between? Wizard 101 is getting too boring for him so he claims, but WOW takes over your life so I've heard.

I don't know anything about games, but I believe that's called a first person game correct? That's the kind he likes, one where he is a character online and can interact with others and play for fun.

Any suggestions for someone in that 10 to 14 yr old age group. He's really into all the dragons and wizards/Harry Potter stuff. He's not a huge fan of Wii games which is the only system we currently own. He defeats every game we get him in hours and won't play them again and doesn't care for sports games.

???

Ty in advance for any suggestions.

if you are ok with him playing games, then get him wow. set him time constraints on how much he can play per day.

if you are worried about him not doing enough other stuff then get him enrolled in some sports and activities, take him out etc.

If you could get him to play something like the Civilization games or Simcity type games at least it could be somewhat educational.

He's active. Plays baseball, jumps on trampoline everyday, plays with neighbor kids a lot, goes swimming and boating on weekends with us.......not worried about that. I just keep hearing that WOW will take over his life. He's at the age it's easy to set limits of how much he can play, and he'll follow those without complaints.

So you are saying for someone that has set time limits to play WOW is basically ok for a 10 yr old? I've watch videos of it, I'm not concerened with the viloence on it. I grew up with viloent games and heavy metal and I'm fine......well imo I am.

Yeah I got him Ceasar, he didn't really care for it. Says he likes games where he's one character and can be online playing with friends. The parents of a few of his friends always get the games for their kids that we get, so they all play together.

I don't think the risks are worth it. WoW is commonly called the crack of all games. It's superrr addictive and I've seen/heard of many friends falling victim to beeing enslaved by that game.

WoW is okay for a 10 year old in the same way that crack is okay for a 10 year old

Maybe he'd like those if they could play online together. Civilzation or Empire do that?

Hear this too much. That's why I was hoping for something better.

That Harry Potter game would be perfect for him. Ty for anymore suggestions.

WoW isn't addictive, it's just super open ended. There is no end point ever and when you reach certain milestones, 100 more options open up for you to do. As long as you set time constraints and explain to him how massive it is and how he doesn't need to accomplish everything in the game in one sitting, it should be fine.

Another thing you might not have considered is the financial cost. To play the game you basically need to buy three games (and a fourth one sometime in the near future), plus the recurring monthly fee.

If you do buy it for him Def put time constraints on how long he can play. I've never played but from what I can tell its like poker for Gamers.

runescape could be a possible option. my lil bro played it (runscape), but it also might take over your kid's life.

or maybe a Nintendo wii (grind on stars and buy it w/ FPPs ).

I agree, WOW is very dangerous. It encourages isolation.

Keep him out of any MMORPG's. Teach him to enjoy life instead.

Wouldn't you say that any video game/activity/7000+ posts on an internet message board "encourages isolation"?

Counter-Strike or StarCraft. Actually StarCraft is extremely dated at this point but a second one is coming out soon, I hope. Still in Beta.

Not sure I know anyone that plays wow heavily, or has played, that objectively thinks the game is worth spending time on. Lots of my old friends look back on regret over all the hours they wasted playing MMOs instead of experiencing life.

But if he insists, definitely put time constraints on him. (good luck keeping this up though in 4 years)

How about the game Fate?

I hear that's kind of like a "kid" version of WoW.

WOW is a time sink. Every couple months they release all new pvp gear or add a new raid and that means you have to update every slot to stay competitive.
Once you finally get everything, new gear is added to the game again and you have to start the grind all over. With new gear you need to spend a ****load of money getting it enchanted, which means time spent grinding for gold. It is worse now with double specs, players have to do twice the work.

My younger brother used to play wow all the time but he finally gave it up, which is good.

He's 10. 10 year-olds do not have important things to do. In fact, no 10 year-old in history has ever done anything valuable. Perfect time to play WoW.

Sure they do they have Snow-forts to make, they have sports to play, they have Graffiti to write, They have old ppl's property to go on and throw snowballs at when the old ppl yell at them,They have old condemned/haunted houses to explore, They have 7minutes in heaven to play,Freeze tag,manhunt...the list goes on and on.

But I guess kids these days just want to play video games. And no I am not an old man I am 30 and grew up with Nintendo and Atari and we still spent most of our time outside. Played video games mostly at night and when we were grounded and couldn't go out.
