I'm not positive but I think there's some convoluted way of doing it that is way too sophisticated for my dumb ass. Something involving a Windows Media Player, fourteen yards of copper wire, and an EZ Bake oven

Well yeah with some fancy software it could be done, but I assume YTF literally means just hooking up a store bought DVR to something.

Another legal way is to have your friend who has a regular cable or directv subscription come to your house and log in to the BTN app or website with his username/password. Then you can all watch BTN2go over the internet.

The way youre asking asking, there currently is not, but....

Besides SlingTV and Vue, there has just been a third streaming tv service made available called DirectTV Now and might be what you need.

Looks like Direct TV will have Big10 Network. There are several tier packages, but one of them is $35 for 100 that includes almost all of their channels. Currently there is no cloud DVR yet but supposed to come in 2017.

Supposedly if you sign up for the intro price, you get that as long as you don't cancel the service. Otherwise, it's $60 and that intro price is supposed to end after a month or two (probably depends on sales).

To me, this is pretty much like having cable tv, but might be a decent compromise on what you're looking for.

The other two streaming tv services won't work for you since Sling TV has DVR features but not the Big 10 and Vue has DVR but no Big 10.

That's what I use.

I don't know about DVRing on any of those devices, though. You'll have to figure that one out on your own
It's true you don't need a playstation to get playstation vue. I use a Roku and you can DVR using it...as well as anyother supported device afaik.

This isn't the case. I have none of these and had no problem activating my account.

Too late to edit my post. You may be able to DVR and watch Big10 Network with Vue. As I mentioned earlier, I've never had Vue. Sounds like NCBoiler can comment.

I have the $35/month package - whatever they call that - and it has the Big10 network. I have never recorded a game with Playstation Vue but I image you can just like any other show. You can view the upcoming four hours of any channel, including Big10 netowrk, and if the game is within that four hour window you can add it to your shows which will record it. I've never done this with a game so I don't know what happens if the game runs long.

If the game is outside the four hour window and you can't see it in the upcoming list of shows and you aren't at home, I image you can add it to your shows from your phone as it gets closer to gametime. Again, I haven't done this. I have never recorded a game.

Yeah, the DVR/my shows feature on vue can be kind of weird, it's not as good as traditional DVR. It works if the show is in the scheduled slot for sure. It cut my bill from $105 with DIRECTV to $35 and it's about 85% as good I'd say, so it's a win.

$150/month to $35/month here. DirecTV Now may have some promise but as of now it doesn't support Roku (coming in the future) and doesn't have DVR capability (coming in the future). When those two problems are resolved I'll check it out.

swapping the HD in a tivo is incredibly easy. Paying $200 more for an extra 500GB is an absurd markup.

UPDATE:

Bought a smart tv with Roku for Christmas. Learned about apps. I now watch Maher and Oliver on the HBO app, Saul on the AMC app, and Maddow on the NBC News app. We got a ton more, similar apps, but I don't watch much tv.

$10 rabbit ears didn't work, nor did $75 amplified window antennas. We tried hiring a guy to put an antenna on our roof, but HOA won't let us. Last resort was an attic antenna, and that seems to work just fine, meaning that finally, the job is DONE!

Now for my question: should I install a signal amplifier on this antenna?

Particulars:

--I live about 20 miles from the transmitters.

--I'm getting 2-3 bars on most of the channels, 1-2 bars on PBS.

--I'm running 100' of coax from antenna to splitter. I don't need 100', I didn't know when I bought it that every foot of coax weakens the signal a little. I can run 25' of coax to the nearest power outlet, put the amp there, and run another 25-30' of coax to get to the splitter. I have no idea how much coax is running through the walls after the splitter--one cable heads to the nearby living room, the other runs upstairs to a bedroom.

--I *really* don't want to run an extension cord up to the attic, but will if it will do wonders for my signal strength.

Does anyone with knowledge of these amps, have an opinion on this? I'll ask the rest of you to refrain from the obvious, "I don't know how an amplifier works, but it HAS to help, right?"

If you're in a standalone house, the HOA almost definitely can't prevent you from installing an antenna.

I don't know where you're at in the Twin Cities, but I'm in Golden Valley and get maybe 45 channels (60% being garbage) w/ my 50-mile amplified antenna, those that come in are all great quality and I live on the lower level of an apartment building, fwiw.

I believe they make up to 60-mile amplified, which should get you everything that I pick up from basically anywhere in the metro w/ a little fiddling to find the proper positioning.

I tried the amp yesterday (if there's still a Radio Shack in your town, go! Mine had 70% off everything in the store!). I now get five bars on every major channel, went from 30 channels to 50.

I'm DONE!

I bought the top nVidia shield last year and got rid of cable... I could never get used to it. It was to much work and never filled the need properly, probably due to my lack of skill. I prefer a plug and play set up, not something I need to set up and maintain.

Hey Neil, unfortunately, that only gives you the right to deploy an antenna or dish on your private patio/balcony in a multi-unit environment.
"OTARD rules do not apply to common areas that are owned by a landlord, a community association or jointly by condominium owners. These common areas may include the roof or exterior walls of a multiple dwelling unit"

Help! I want to cut the cord. I have Verizon for landline and internet and directiv for cable. I have a 1950's monster antenna on my roof, but it does not have coaxial cable. Just some flat wire with two points of connection. Can this be converted?
