There’s no Attitude Era without Jerry. He really cracked open the cultural obsession with “reality,” for better or worse.

It is pretty remarkable how brazen the Saudis have been all the way down to the trophies, but I guess the American guys don't care as long as the checks keep clearing.

Even though he is light years more important than George Michael, RIP Gordon Lightfoot nonetheless

Heard this AM. Remember Lightfoot from my long-gone youth, as he was popular on the radio station my parents listened to (kind of news/easy listening mix at the time).

Also, the Edmund Fitzgerald's last port of call was my hometown. Big coverage up there, of course, then when the song came out, it got huge airplay.

Y. It's strange how much you don't notice how bad a place somewhere is, until you go to somewhere nice.

I'd guess I was ~junior high age when the ship went down.

RIP Doyle apparently for real this time. 89 years is a fair deal though.

I pestered him at the Golden Nugget during the ‘01 WSOP and he was very gracious.

I should look for that picture.

Doyle once made an absurd call of an all-in overbet by Patrik Antonius, then flipped over 33 to see that Antonius bailed him out by having A2.

Antonius, being a big baby but also incidentally being correct, said, “how can you make that call?” Doyle responded, “how can I make that call? How can you make that bet? We’re playing poker here, not solitaire.”

The overwhelming 2p2 reaction was to swing from Doyle’s nuts for muttering that line, and everyone who reacted that way to that sequence as a whole was stupid and wrong.

RIP Doyle.

I can't believe that even on a non-poker sub-forum of 2+2 would we consider Doyle Effing Brunson less important than George Michael.

Who was George Michael again? And why is he still the metric in the title of this thread as he has been surpassed here by a number of corpses?

IIRC he's a dude who masturbated in a public bathroom, but not on a public stage like Pee Wee Herman. Also Pee Wee Herman isn't dead.

He's still the metric because no mod wants to change it.

Also there's definitely more than one good George Michael song if you're giving him both solo work and the Wham stuff.

I thought all the Wham stuff was crap. The only song I have ever heard by him that I liked was Faith, and even it had insipid lyrics. I didn't go seeking his songs that weren't played on the radio though.
