I stand corrected re: whataburger locations, whoa. So it is a southern thing and not at all an east coast thing. I think they only reason we have them as far east as J'ville is because Mark Brunell was a big fan, and decided he'd open a bunch of franchises. He's since gone bankrupt, but the restaurants themselves seem to have flourished. I thought they spread to hear south from New England, not east from Texas... d'oh.

They kind of go for that old-timey diner feel and food, hence the lettuce I don't care for, but the bun is just like I used to get at a small town diner growing up. I think it might be lightly toasted. The patty melts are friggin great, for sure. Very substantial, and they serve them up so hot and juicy you really have to be careful not to burn yourself, haha.

This is what mine had last time I went.

Also, tried the XXL Taco over the weekend, with shredded chicken.

It was a little thicker and crunchier than a normal shell. It wasn't harder to eat than a normal hard-shell taco. If anything it was easier. It was really good for a taco. Better than a normal taco but not quite locos level. Doritos Locos XXL seems like the next logical step in the evolution and would definitely be a must try.

Biggest issue I had was that the juice from the shredded chicken made the bottom of mine soggy during the ~10m between ordering and eating it.

I had XXL steak taco this weekend and I would rank it pretty high. It's definitely something I would order again. My shell didn't shatter into 100 pieces after the first bite or anything, kept its structure throughout. The combination of the avocado ranch and sour cream gives it a really nice flavor, and the shell tastes noticeably better and is of noticeably higher quality. Oh and regarding the prices, mine were a bit higher than the online review indicated. Steak version was 3.49 (online quoted it at 3.19), but they did offer it in a combo paired with a soft taco.

The bad news is I went at like 4:00pm and also ordered one of the $1 chili-cheese grillers, but it was obviously made at 2:00pm or something and had sat out a long time. The combination of said griller and alcohol made my Sunday pretty rough.

Also Taco Bell has their new fountain drinks too. I had the diet baja blast and wife had the mountain dew sangrita blast. Both were def. something we would order again.

I just ate at Taco Bell. Ordered a Chili Cheese Fries Griller. $1.08. Hand the lady $5.25. She looks at the money, looks at the screen and pauses for a moment, enters the cash amount and the drawer pops open. I then hear her say "****" under her breath and panic washes over her face. I know that she entered $5.00 instead of $5.25, and in my head I'm saying "Come on, you can do this". She hands me back $3.08. Not even close. I tell her, "You gave me the wrong change. You owe me $1.09." She's very confused and asks for my receipt. I tell her to give me the dollar and we'll call it a day. She hands me back the receipt and the dollar. Scam?

Personally I don't do that to be helpful - I do it because change sucks and I want as little of it as possible.

Cashier obv threw a $5 bill in the drawer and was trying to pocket the quarter.

Demi, this was clearly an honest, math-challenged mistake. However, if she had given you an extra $10 that you kept, then it would clearly be a scam, no question about it.

I used to do it because change sucks too. Then I realized me doing that sucks worse.

Depends. Giving $5.25 on $1.08 isn't too high on the "being helpful" scale. Giving $20.25 on $10.23 is though.

I'll use my card if they have a good CC machine. I never use it at the deli by me that has a really crappy one that takes ~20-30 seconds and I have to sign.

I get paid in cash so I'm always paying with cash and I try to minimize the amount of change I get back. I'm way overdue for a 100% Coinstar Amazon gift card exchange.

Honestly didn't know that you could get no fees from Coinstar. Was saving coins up to put into bank. Not sure if worth depositing few hundred bucks into bank or coinstar

Me neither. I always thought those things were a ripoff. Can you put pennies into them?

My credit union has them in their branches free to use for members. I didn't know that and actually rolled a bunch of coins to take in one day and wound up busting the rolls to put in the machine. What a waste of time, lol

People have mentioned A&W in here, I pretty much forgot those existed. It seems like they are disappearing. Best root beer ever and I had to look up their current menu online. They still have some pretty awesome stuff on their menu like a chili cheese dog and corn dog nuggets. God knows how unhealthy those things are, but if you're going fast food you might as well go all the way.

El D,

I hadn't heard of steak fingers and didn't want to assume that they were exactly what they sounded like, so I googled:

How do you improve a chicken-fried steak? More surface area, of course!

EDIT: Don't want to be confused as sarcastic, that is ****ing awesome and now I'm hungry.

Yeah for a while they've offered no juice on certain gift cards. You can't get no juice on cash but if one of the gift cards interest you then coinstar isn't a bad option for cashing in change. My credit union does no juice cash so I just go that route.

Yes you can. The last time I used it the Amazon voucher didn't process and it just gave me the cash voucher with no fees.

DQ is great at chicken and dessert

Whataburger GOAT obv as I grew up in what was their original HQ.

So many great offerings only thing they suck at is onion rings. I think this has been noted multiple times ITT already though.
