I went and had the McDonalds Build-a-burger at one of the trial restaurant locations today.
Building the burger is done on ipad's attached to the wall. It had some different options and sauces normally not found (I think) at McDonalds.
Sauces included: ketchup, mustard, mayo, BigMac Sauce, BBQ, Spicy mayo and creamy something
also they had guac, grilled onions, along with standard burger toppings.
You could put pepper jack, American or white cheddar. Cheese was free and you could put multiple slices.
You were also able to specify number of patties, add bacon and type of bun.
The stupid part was that after you did the ipad thing, a mobile cashier would then hand transcribe the order to their POS station and take the rest of your order. It was brain damagingly inefficient. The plus side was that the McDonald's had a TON of workers to help deal with the crowds. They probably had 3x the number of workers for a McDonald's of that size.
The burger was about $5.50 ($7.50 combo). It was pretty tasty but not to the level of a 5-guys or Smashburger.
I was talking to one of the zillion workers about how long they've been doing the build-a-burger. They said since early November and that McDonald's is pulling the plug on the concept TOMORROW. LOL. Nice timing for me.
