A bit late here but wanted to share my take on Potbelly: by far #1 reason to go is to get a sandwich with giardiniera on it. It competes with almost any in Chicago, in fact I think some local magazine did a blind taste test and their giardiniera was near the top of the pack. I think it adds a lot of value to every Potbelly sandwich.

If hot peppers in olive oil isn't your thing, though, then I for sure agree at least a couple names on your list are better, and you can skip Potbelly.

I’ll have it on a Chicago Italian beef, but I can take or leave it. I polled my friends and they all seemed to have the same not memorable in any way experience from Potbelly that I also don’t remember. Don’t see myself going back. If I do I will post about it here.

JoeC makes an excellent point re: Potbelly giardiniera (they just call them hot peppers in the store). They are outstanding. They sell them by the jar in the store, and I will almost always splurge and buy some for home on the occasion I make it to a potbelly. Malucci, I highly recommend giving potbelly one more try: meatball sub + hot peppers, it's a really top-tier chain sandwich IMO. I put it right up there with jersey mike's & cappriotti's cheesesteaks, ahead of most of the others on your list (though I've never been to cheba hut). The Zapp's Voodoo chips + pretty darn good cookies and cream milkshake, or fresh baked lemon cookie, make Potbelly a very good overall experience imo.

I don’t like Cap’s cheesesteaks because they use white American cheese which is inferior to provolone IMO. I’m a big fan of Penn Station actually, particularly their fries, but there are no locations out here.

Went to Popeyes at 11am thinking it might not be so busy that early but the cars were backed up all the way into the bus lane to turn into the center on Sahara and Jones. Maybe if the meal was free I would wait that long in a drive thru.

I went to Arbys and got a steak and bacon melt, and a butter garlic steak sandwich. The steak was not pink as pictured. Verdict: decent, unlikely to get again as they weren't particularly craveable, and $6.69 a la carte.
