There is nothing that special about the INO concept in itself. That's kind of what makes it so great. The simplicity. There are thousands of places where you can get a cheeseburger with , onions, lettuce, tomato and a 1,000 island type spread on it. Where INO excels is in execution and value. Everything is super fresh and they have great quality and presentation. Also their prices are pretty damn cheap. Places where you can get a fresh quality double cheese burger and fresh cut fries for under $6 are few and far between. Hell, maybe even non existent. I can't think of another one.
What's so amazing about "animal style" that differs from just getting the classic with grilled onions? So for "animal style" you get grilled onions by default, they add extra spread and pickles and then put mustard on the patty when they grill it. Grilled onions aren't something exclusive to animal style, neither is the spread, there is just more of it, the mustard gets over powered by all the extra spread anyway and then they add pickles. So basically it's just extra spread and pickles. I'm sure you could get that there anywhere if you asked for it.
Anything that is as popular as In n Out is going to have people saying that it's overrated. That's just how things like that work. I love In N Out. I eat there usually at least once a week sometimes multiple times a week. I'll be the first to say that sure I've had better burgers in my life but they sure as hell weren't $3.50 and attached with the convenience of a drive thru, I can tell you that much. For the price point and being fast food, you just aren't beating the quality that you get there.
