Mad Men is top tier for character development, acting, writing - all the good drama stuff. Its pace can be slow and it's light on action, so I can see how some people might not like it, but it's one of my favorite series.

I'm two episodes into Chernobyl. The first episode was OK but did not hook me like I expected it to. I probably read too many glowing reviews and expected too much. Episode 2 was better and I'm more invested now, but I still don't see how this can turn into an all-time great series.

Ditto for Deadwood. Three episodes in and it's good, but I don't see anything special about it. I'll balance my subtle disappointment by saying that I'm still early in both Chernobyl and Deadwood; they may get much better. To contrast that statement, though, the shows that I consider all-time greats (The Wire, Mad Men, True Detective S1) were just outstanding right from the beginning.

I'd been hearing great things about City of God for years but never got around to watching it. Well, I did last night and it deserves the praise. Excellent movie 9.3/10. Like a Brazilian Bronx Tale.

without thinking too much about it, once Deadwood gets away from the Calamity Jane story line it gets a whole lot better.

Lots of good quotes in "Croupier" by the protagonist/narrator/writer-in-the-plot. My favorite is: "Gambling isn't about money. It's about escaping from reality." That quote isn't true for everybody, but it is very true for some. Reminds me of a quote by some psychologist: "They come to the casino to leave the self behind."

Meh. You could get better from a guy on the bridge selling waters, or he just ripped some homeless guy off, either way nothing special.

Chernobyl English speaking Russians with UK accents or Smth almost made me not finish it. It was ok besides that, my only other complaint was the management was kind of over the top in their dismissal of underlings concerns. I’m sure there was some srs ineptitude from decision makers IRL but no chance the way it was depicted was realistic.

Huge in France was enjoyable. I found myself kind of surprised that I was enjoying it since almost every single character is unlikable. Ending kinda pissed me off tho, and looks like there is still no word either way on a season 2 even tho it came out two years ago.

edit: heh I just started it, looks like my pal Ron got old and semi-fat, oh well I guess time'll do that to a man. I still like him.

2nd edit: hey this is good, and it has ex-drunks in it too.
+1 He stood out the first time I saw him in Swingers and has done so in everything I've seen him in, I especially liked his character in Band of Brothers but that could be overstated simply because I LOVE everything about BoB

Gad has been outed as a huge joke stealer and acted liked a tool about it. His new career in USA must have taken a big hit and Netflix being very invested in stand up cannot like that if they wanna keep good relationships with their artists.

Didn’t love it. The story itself was good and had some very solid parts, but felt it could have been 40 minutes shorter without losing the narrative.

"The Last Blockbuster" just hit Netflix. Cool doc about the rise and fall of Blockbuster and the last store standing. Lots of great memories.

Hard to believe I would go to Blockbuster and make selections of movies(VHS) based on the picture and summary on the back, no IMDB/Rotten ratings and reviews to look at. lol

yeah, about the same, decent, not great.

I was expecting more of an interesting plot in the 2nd half.

anyone watch the hulu doc on the 90s kids actors with Soleil Moon Frye yet? Trailer looked good, but I have to wait till my gf is gone in case I am forced to uncontrollably beat it to Soleil like I was back in the day

heh, that does not seem surprising. Sucks tho, as I think a second season could have been good.

I kind of agree. Then again I watched it on a hotel room bed during a tumultuous period in my life.

His character seemed too over the top. Especially the end scene in the bowling alley with the preacher. Just didn't make sense.
