Interesting, just last night i was watching Handmaid's Tale and (slight spoiler) Madeline Brewer's character was about to be stoned to death and she said something like "go easy on me, ok" which was both hilarious and horrifying simultaneously.

I tried to watch a episodes 6 and 7 of the third season to give it just one more shot and it actually gets worse. I don't think I laughed once during either episode. Most of the jokes are something similar to, "Can you believe that people did that during the 70s? Isn't it ridiculous when you look back on it?" The third season addition of a Vietnam vet who married a Vietnamese woman after burning down her village during the war is bizarre.

+1 for the love for The Last Kingdom. I think it's awesome. I have a crush on both Skade and (looks up spelling) Aethelflaed. (Too many names that are similar makes this often confusing, though lol.)

Anyone see Russel Brand's Re-Birth yet? It's phenomenal. It's more rant and performance art and confessional than a traditional stand-up, but it's still damn funny. Moving, too.

One I'm really looking forward to watching next is:

1983:

Decades after a 1983 terrorist attack, a law student and a cop uncover a conspiracy that's kept Poland as a police state and the Iron Curtain standing.

Polish TV show. Looks awesome, and I love alternate universe stories.

Also Netflix picks up season 2 of "You" that just finished a few weeks ago on Lifetime and was actually pretty good. Stalker/Killer type show.

Binged all of Season 2 of Mrs. Maisel. Season is really good. Just throw every award possible Tony Shaloub's way right now.

Nothing more boring than being contrarian.

So let me be a little contrarian. Finally got around watching Mad Men. Through 4 seasons, it's good, duh.

But GOAT? Not even close. Watching people constantly smoke, everywhere, drink in the office, men treating women as underling objects, yeah, I get it. That was what it was like in the 60s, and yeah, it's definitely cool to see a show actually portray that reality at that time. I'm enjoying it.

But that alone doesn't make a great movie or series. Story, characters, compelling drama, surprise, that's the stuff. Mad Men has all of that, just not in spades. Recommend it, if you haven't seen it. And that's about it.

I've never gotten past the first season of Mad Men...and it literally has everything I could want in a show. But it's just...boring.

I recently finished Mad Men on my second try. I agree totally Sparks. It was good, I'm definitely happy I went back and gave it another chance, but it probably doesn't even crack the Top 10 for me.

Mad Men does an amazing job of recreating a time and a place and letting you explore that world. The subtle references to important cultural events are insightful. As someone born in the 80s, it opened my eyes to the way the world used to work.

But the genius of the show is making that shockingly relatable to modern-day society. All of the issues are eerily familiar. Addiction, dysfunctional relationships, experimenting with drugs and philosophies, greed / jealousy, work-life balance, death, mental illness, gender equality, etc. And this is all fleshed out with deep and interesting characters and sharp dialogue that rarely feels cheap or sensational. It can be surprisingly funny too.

I acknowledge that the pacing is somewhat slow, but I never mind because every detail is placed with purpose (like The Wire). There are plenty of twists and turns that are not easy to see coming, but make perfect sense. It is firmly in my top 5 shows of all time.

I stopped watching Man Men I think season 4, I don't remember. I thought it was a great show but I eventually just got tired of the same old Don Draper schtick. It's also one of the first shows I remember thinking was a great show but realizing that the main character/s are completely unlikable. Which is a much more common aspect of TV now.

Off the top of my head, in no particular order, here's 9, so maybe Mad Men creeps in at 10, lol.

I don't starts shows anymore until the series finale is announced, which is why Better Call Saul and Ray Donovan aren't on there but probably will be.

sopranos
breaking bad
homeland
shameless
the americans
the shield
game of thrones
the west wing
fargo

Edit: honorable mentions to Leftovers and Lost.

the gf and I binged Yukon Gold over the last three days and were pretty enthralled the whole time. It follows four small (<10 people) mining operations over the course of the mining season (16 weeks) in the middle of nowhere in canada. Very similar to oil field work and a lot of it rang true to my experiences. It's kinda crazy that the machines will work for days and they'll process endless amounts of dirt to end up with something that fits in the palm of your hand, but is also worth a hundred thousand dollars.

Stumbled upon the BBC show Fake or Fortune, about art experts following the provenience of paintings to figure out whether or not they are legitimate Renoirs, Manets, etc., or fakes.

I can't stop watching them.

netflix's mystery science theater 3000: the return was great. i just binged the series without ever really being a fan of the original and i enjoyed it a lot. the sarcastic commentary is great but the skits are incredible. they just released 6 new episodes a couple weeks ago and those are fun too.

Not kidding - start watching at season 2 - You can pick up enough that you won't be lost and it moves a lot better than season 1.

You can ignore all the schtick about Don's secret past as it never really amounts to anything.

Man, I just finished this season today. David Dawson is an unreal acting talent. Alfred has so many layers, probably my favorite character of the show.
