This really is a razor thin margin for a company as renowned as Netflix.
It's the same reason I just don't think they will survive in the international markets.

Sure they can beat almost anyone's price but the markets are much different in the UK and already well established. I don't see them taking any contracts from Sky which currently hold all of the big production companies.

Way to early to draw any conclusions about their current business model.

Edit: they have signed some huge deals for mad men, breaking bad, etc, probably more coming like the weinstein deal. It's a long approach.

Watched Lincoln Lawyer, Broken Flowers, Food Inc, and Religulous based off recommendations here. All very different movies, but all worth watching imo.

Lincoln Lawyer is a good lawyer flick with some nice twists and turns.

Broken Flowers was definately my favorite out of these four. It's actually a bit deeper than I think people here have given it credit for.
Spoiler:
Christmas Carol is the movie I compared it too right after seeing it, with obviously only a focus on his romantic life (but which actually comes to define his entire life) and so I think the Christmas Carol comparison is deserved. There was a poster on IMDB whose OP about it delved into this concept much more specifically, and I believe that it had the most well-written idea of what his girlfriends represented

Food Inc. is worth it for your health, if for nothing else. Plato's Cave and all, though, so you've been warned.

Religulous was ok, but wow does Maher go after the lowest hanging fruit possible. I mean, I guess I should have known that from the title alone, but still.

Now, for my own contribution. Movies that I have watched recently and imo worth watching:

Half Nelson
Chinatown (cant believe I had never seen this one before)
The Piano Teacher (kinda ****ed up movie, definately not for everyone, you've been warned)

Oh yea, and I have noticed that whereas last year I was able to insta-watch probably about 60% of all movies I searched for via streaming, this year it seems to be more like only 25%. Pretty disappointing, especially since they raised prices.

That elmo documentary is really good. Such a joyous little film, because you can tell how much Kevin clash really enjoys what we he does and little kids seem to absolutely adore this character he created. Everything comes across as really genuine.

Netflix is becoming great if you like tv series and lame for everything else.

story up on Yahoo the other day mentioned that with the removal of Starz content, Netflix is focusing it's streaming content almost exlclusively as a TV/documentary playground. They are touting a drama TV season as essentially a 24 hour movie. Which isn't a bad way for them to go about it actually. Until they are able to stream movies in the time it takes for them to appear at Redbox/PPV, its the main way they will be able to market the content.

The DVD service still offers plenty of movies. TV series are way better for Netflix Instant because ostensibly they only need to negotiate one deal to show an entire series.

Without anything to replace the movie losses am going to cancel. Not thrilled with it before and would rather just go with discs and order whatever I want instead of a really limited selection with barely anything that I specifically am looking for.

Saw Half Nelson awhile back, thought it was OK.

Incredibly I haven't seen Chinatown but it is already in my queue.

Just looked up Piano Teacher, very favorable reviews but it seems damned weird.

Is this a new disclosure? I was noticing that there seemed to more work finding something I'd want to watch. I just figured I was in a bad mood but evidently the selection has shrunk.

Not so much a new disclosure as Starz had the majority of their big budget recent releases. Right now they don't really have a deal with anybody to supply them with big new release movies, although the Winestein deal should help remedy that a bit.

Meh, when they switched over to charging $8 for each, I just kept the DVD and instant plans. Then I figured I was paying $8 for one or two DVDs a month, so I canned the DVDs last month. The best you can hope for is 2 DVDs a week anyway, so I'll just Redbox a movie when I'm picking up groceries when I feel like it.

Watched The Legend of Bruce Lee. It's actually supposed to be an action flick with Bruce Le (sic), but it's actually a Netflix goof and what's linked is Bruce Lee: The Legend, a documentary, and one of the better ones I've seen. Lots of footage I've never seen in other docs: interviews, screen test that led to his role in the Green Hornet, acting film footage from when he was a kid, etc.

I agree that if you're only looking for newer movies, Netflix Instant or Netflix DVD service is pretty awful.

It's been like a month since I saw it and I'm still not sure whether or not I like Black Swan (aka Bitches Be Crazy), so at least in my case that comparison does nothing.

EDIT: and agree Redbox is top notch when it comes to renting new releases. I particularly like the ability to view inventory and reserve online and then go pick it up. Only real downside is dealing with the riffraff that sometimes hangs around the box outside the Circle K where I reserve.
