it's a collection of atomic/cold war propaganda which is very funny and definitely interesting looking back. cool if you're into that stuff for sure

Watched Winter's Bone last night, it was very good.

It's about a 17 yo girl in the poor country meth-cooking woods of Missouri trying to find her father to force him to make good on his jail bond. It is very slow and very intense but very good. Felt like some slow paced intense Pacino or Eastwood movie from the 70s. Acting is top notch. John Hawkes (Eastbound and Down) gives a very strong performance as the girl's meth using Uncle

I also really enjoyed that every accent in the movie felt authentic and real (I grew up near this area) as opposed to the drawl-y southern accents non-southern actors sometimes use that sound nothing like how people actually talk.

re; Winters Bone

Did you check out the behind the scenes special or whatever? I guess you can't get it on insta stream but I found it pretty interesting. A handful of the actors were actual locals in that town who worked by some nearby factory and it was really interesting to hear their interviews.

+1 for it being a really neat movie.

Last House on the Left (1972 version) Borderline 3 stars for me. Could not get any more 1970's than that. Did feel very sadistic for a low-budget horror film, but realistic, too. Had it been longer, it'd have probably been a 2-star for me, but for what it is, it was disturbing enough to have merit.

+1 on Winter's Bone being very good, easy to see why it got a Best Picture nom.

Their opinion is that it's an entertaining action movie and they (now just Ebert) are not afraid to give positive reviews to movies that do dumb entertainment well. "Movies like this embrace goofiness with an almost sensual pleasure."

Godfather III was nominated for Best Picture. It's very 1998 of you to imply that the movie is bad (it's not AS good obviously).

I post these every couple months but anyone that likes WWII docs should check out Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State, and WWII in HD or The Rape of Europea which is about Hitlers looting of art during WWII. All are amazing and really put life into perspective.

Been on a documentary kick lately and enjoyed these-

Home is a look at a single mother of 6 kids in Newark, NJ and her attempts to get out of public housing.

Up The Yangtze looks at how a peasant family is affected by the Three Gorges Dam.

Spirit of the Marathon focuses on a variety of folks as they prep for the Chicago Marathon.

LHOTL is an odd movie. For the msot part, the story, the revenge, everything about it is top notch.

But the rape scene is over the top and overlong, and isn't something I can watch more than once. It destroys the rewatchability for me, and was much much better done in the 2000 era remake (forget the exact date). Put that scene into the rest of the movie from the 70's and you have a very very good movie. But for the rape scene alone, its very difficult to ever watch more than once.

Up The Yangtze is just an amazing snapshot of life. Didn't fully appreciate it until reflecting on it for a little bit after it finished.

Speaking of Docs:

Just got done Mugabe and the White African

A documentary about a white farmer in Zimbabwe, fighting a case to try and keep his farm from the dictator of zimbabwe who has been seizing all property of White Farmers in Zimbabwe.

Very good. Would give it a 4.5/5 on the documentary scale

MILF Solid 3 stars. Dialogue was awful, acting was terrible, plot was mostly thin, plotholes all over the place, soundtrack mostly consisted of bouncy MIDI tunes, but gratuitous nudity of many many hot older womenz gets this a minimum of 3 stars. Also,
Spoiler:
a guy gets a load blown in his eye by accident through a peephole, then gets anal beads accidentally thrown into his other eye at the end of the movie, so I give a little credit for a creative spin on "pie in the face" gag

Don't want to read the thread in OOTV to avoid spoilers, but I noticed the Starz series Camelot expires tomorrow. Is it worth doing a marathon over the next 2 days?
