I have two godsons, age 3 & 5.

I have told them that for every birthday, etc, they will receive some kind of nerf gun.

I've been shopping for them lately, and A LOT has changed.

As a kid, there were two dominant weapons.

Nerf Sharpshooter (later upgraded by the Sharpshooter II)
Nerf Bow & Arrow

These guns dominated the field. They were accurate and powerful, and simple to use.

Additionally, there were the big ball blaster guns (Blast-a-ball) that fired the orginal nerf balls at great distances. They were incredibly simple to use and could be reloaded by pressing it against a ball on the ground.

The nerf guns now are all the newer N-Strike line. I have noticed several things about these

1) They are designed to shoot many rounds very quickly (the $10 gun i bought myself is a 6-shooter that you just **** & fire for rapid shooting). There are also battery powered 25-shot belt-fed monsters.

2) Additional rounds are readily-available and plentiful. When I was a kid, you could get 3 additional balls for the blaster by contacting Nerf directly and paying something like $3-4 a ball. Now they are 12 for $10 in any toy store. The darts are the same way: $10 gets you 30 darts. I never met ANYONE who got replacement Arrows back in the day. Once you lost all your ammo, you bought a new gun.

3) They are not nearly as powerful, accurate, or easy to use as they used to be, and with multiple moving parts they are likely to break more quickly. They also are more prone to jamming.

Maybe it's just the limited sample i have seen in toy stores, but there just isn't the same kind of quality we used to have as kids.

Anyone else have thoughts on the subject?

It's not his kids, godkids. He's practically obligated to poison their minds.

I am sad this thread isn't about new ways to shoot things at kyleb.

I'm sure they made them weaker & suckier for liability reasons. Yet another case of lawyers ruining our good time. I mean we were brought up watching Tom & Jerry and the Roadrunner, and now what passes for entertainment is Barney and the Backyardigans. WTF.

Let's not forget the deadliest Nerf weapon of all:

These things are nasty in the hands of grown men.

This is pretty much the sickest thing I have seen.
Here is the schematics on it.

The top-of-the-line blaster for mission supremacy, the NERF N-STRIKE VULCAN EBF-25 blaster is a 25-dart belt-fed fully automatic blaster that will intimidate any opponent. This impressive blaster comes complete with a fold-up tripod to steady your aim, 25 sonic micro darts that whistle through the air when launched and a 25-dart belt. The NERF N-STRIKE VULCAN EBF-25 blaster features the Tactical Rail System allowing players to customize their blaster for each mission - for example, players can use the green 'night vision' Tactical Light accessory (sold separately) for nighttime missions. Six "D" batteries are required but not included.

I used to be able to throw that thing like 25 yards on a rope.

Words cant even describe the giddy joy of shooting 25 nerf arrows in like 5 seconds.

there was a recent thread where this was discussed at length. It was concluded that at a certain point, they started to go backwards just like Nerf.

I think the CPS 2000 was the ultimate gun, then they stepped it back down...

There is apparently a group of people who modify nerf weapons to get the maximum power, etc out of them.

Maybe I should start a thread about the hobbies that wives hate the most....

my buddy had a gun similar to this one and we used to load up each tube with firecrackers/m-80 type explosives, light the fuses and then shoot them at ****...was pretty sweet, kind of like having your own mini-grenade launcher
