hey guys. I need some help and don't really have any idea where to go with this. The google machine isn't helping me. This hinge below is on a piece of wooden furnature. I'm usually pretty handy but I'm not sure where to start with this. The hinge is metal and plastic and the plastic part is broken to where it doesn't hold the wooden piece attached. I don't know who the manufacturer is so I can't get a replacement. I went to a bunch of hardware stores (some non-chain ones too) and no one said they could replicate it. Anyone have any advice on what to do / where to go with this? Thanks.

If something is moving but shouldn't be, use duct tape. If something is not moving but should be, use WD40.

You're welcome!

Why not just remove it and replace it with a non broken hinge of a different style?

These are set in the wood about 1/8? of an inch deep. Could I just take them off and put new hinges in that are larger than this one and cover up the indents?

Hard to tell with OP's crappy photo, but this looks similar to the hinges on a couple of tables I got from Crate & Barrell ~10 years ago. Except mine are all brass finish and not crappy plastic (although the screws have rusted).

Use a desk lamp instead of your camera flash so you'll pick an angle that won't be washed out. Also, lay a ruler/tape measure down next to the hinge for scale and I'll try to confirm they'd be interchangeable with mine. Then you can call Crate & Barrel and ask where to get replacements.

Take out broken, cheap, plastic hinge. Replace with a larger, nicer hinge.

So simple

Stay calm. Don't let this minor problem make you come unhinged.

Things will turn out fine.

If it's really important take the hinge to a metal shop or the local high school and ask someone if they can make you a new 1 out of metal.

I'm sure someone could make it for a couple dollars.

A couple won't cut it. I own a precision metal fabrication custom shop.

Is the hinge side hidden from normal view? If so and assuming the functionality is "standard", buy a piano hinge at Lowes or HD. It would probably be best to extend new hinge several inches to each side of old.....maybe even add a "filler" under in the gap if more than 1/8th"

would like a better picture and idea of use.

I circled the two issues here.

1. The hinge is cracked down the middle
2. The hinge is broken on the part that connects it to the metal piece of which it swivels around.

What is the hinge on? Looks like a worktop.....

If it only has to be functional and not aesthetically appealing just put another hinge 50mm from the broken one

I'm going to replace both hinges. I seriously feel ******ed for not thinking of that originally. The only thing on my mind was how to fix the existing one... Thanks for the help.

You need to buy a lathe.

It looks like the existing hinge rotates off-center, which may or may not be important. Most standard hinges will rotate in the center, at the joint, while the one in your picture rotates off the joint. So I'd just double check exactly how that thing is folding and if you need to get an off-center hinge.
